Not as much as you might think. 10 minutes in a tanning bed has the same dose as a much longer sit in the sun. It is more about energy than intensity.

So you're afraid of ionizing radiation, blue radiation, and microwave radiation, but not violet, or red or IR? I don't see a pattern. Those are some random λ, sir.
What determines whether you're afraid of a wavelength?

Oh, no I don't think I would like to be subjected to other high intensity doses of the violet, red or IR. I have had too much sun esposure in younger days and I definitely have some problems from that so I guess that coupled with actually seeing a number of melanoma patients die I get a little bit excited over it.
I did see a paper once that OSHA had on the web that stated some laser wavelengths to be avoided for more than very short exposure durations but I don't remember the times. IR was in there and the times were very short.
I just wouldn't point my high powers at myself or another. My dermatologist has told me to avoid sunlight as much as I can and he would probably be all over me otherwise. Just my situation and it varies greatly from person to person. Do you have more information to share?:)

If you mean the MPE tables, you'd be wrong there as well.

So you admit it has little to do with wavelength?

Actually it wasn't a table it was a listing for less than and greater than 5mW laser exposures.

Cyparagon, I'm sorry I'm trying to do many things here at once (over multitasking). I'm going to get myself in trouble with my wife. Was this MPE for ambient skin exposure?
This is interesting. Thanks,

That MPE plot is for eye damage.

The 266 line in interesting - in continues downwards with time, and never reaches a safe plateau like the visible wavelengths do. It is also much higher in power for short duration exposure.

Obviously there is a good reason for this: While 266 is not going to end up as a pinprick on the retina, it will damage the cornea and possibly the lens of the eye with prolonged exposure. This is a mostly cumulative risk, which is why the safe limit keeps on dropping even at very low power levels.

I think I remember this thread.

Was this the one where the guy tried to do a tattoo on his arm with his laser?

I think the picture came from a thread that was deleted some time ago. The results speak for themselves though.
