650nm protective glasses dilemma

Hi all!

I am making my first project with a dvd laser of 650nm 200-300mw power, and am looking for some proper eye protection.
Now after doing some research, my two candidates are glasses from zonestealth, as I saw some members recommend them.

Has anyone tried the second one? I am worried about possible too high OD level, as I want to be able to actually see the laser dot. Also, my future project might require a higher powered IR lasers in watt ranges, so that should be a plus..

I wanted to go with the Eagle pair, but with the $25 shipping they definitely go over my budget.

Any thoughts and opinions are very welcome!

Can't really make up my mind which one would be better. I am thinking the second one with OD 5+, or could that be too much to see a laser dot? How am I going to focus a laser if I cannot see it at all? :undecided:

With goggles at OD 5+ you should still be able to see the dot, even if you can't see red light, you will be able to see a small dot, as it should fluoresce on most objects.

Well I guess that solves it. OD5 it is!

I will make sure to review these goggles, as I couldn't find a review on this forum.

Uh, I completely forgot about this, sorry!

I have bought the OD5 goggles, and they are truly great. At least to me, as my first protective eyewear.
They block 5mw 650nm laser completely, which is not surprising.
But when used with my 300mw 650nm laser, while focused a small red dot can be seen.

There is no way I can measure the laser power through those glasses, as I don't have proper equipment, but from my beginners point of view, the glasses are really good, and I would recommend them.

They also arrived in a Eagle Pair case (as they are an Eagle Pair glasses) with a soft cloth for cleaning.
After googling about cheap copies and their indications, I concluded that these are a real deal.

Just one last question, after burning stuff or using a lot your 300mw laser while wearing the goggles, do you get eye strain? Any shining spots on your vision, or you can see normally?

The longest time I have been using the goggles was something like 45 minutes, and I had none of those.
No eye strain, completely normal vision, and especially no shining spots in my vision. The laser dot is really small, and weak (but not faint). Not strong enough to leave me any kind of vision dots.

If I am not mistaking, this is an EP-14 model, but with a slightly different frame (goggles frame).

The only thing that I am unhappy is that these goggles do not protect you completely. While looking down max, you can see your moustache area unprotected, as well a tiny bit on the sides, making it relatively unsafe to operate the laser while not facing it directly (looking up while the laser is down for example). But I don't know if there is any other pair of glasses that protect from all possible angles.
But you can probably fix this somehow, by putting some cloth down to block your vision or something, even tho it wouldn't really be esthetic :crackup:

All in all, I am happy with my goggles and I can recommend them :beer:
