The question is,

I was wondering if I NEED a key-lock safety in the state of Florida to own one of these legally.

LZGN - 532nm 30mW Focusable Green Laser Pointer

The key-lock sounds like an annoyance, but I was wondering if I didn't need to have it.


YES, I read the Country laws sticky, but I was confused as to state laws...

Regardless that laser will not be legal.

In order for it to be legal it has to meet other criteria, and be approved by the FDA. That laser, or any of the lasers from lazerer for that matter are not legal.

What are the specifications of a 30mW laser that would be legal...

Like, what will it need to have to be able to get past customs.

The laser will need a FDA accession number to be legal.

It needs that number, or the right packaging. I've imported all of the lasers in my sig (except the argon), none have that number, never once was one confiscated.

A Florida state senator pushed through a "no pointers greater then 5 mW in public" rule a few years ago. What you do on your own private property is your problem. Aiming a laser at a law enforcement officer or a moving car is also illegal in Florida.

There is your answer.

It can't be sold as a laser device, but can be sold as an "oem" laser component, which is to be used in a system or device created by the buyer of the component (which is then assumed that said system or device will be approved by FDA before being itself sold as a laser device to an end user). Components don't have to meet the same criteria as complete systems or devices. That's why most not-FDA-approved lasers that have high power (and are aimed at hobbiests who like "cool stuff") are usually sold as "components", not complete laser "systems" or "devices".

The cop can not be doing any cop duties. if he's just standing in a crowd or parking lot technically you can put a laser on him.
"technically" in Florida

Define "cop duties." I'm fairly confident that if you intentionally lased an officer, on duty or off, you technically are an idiot or LOVE having long intimate conversations with cops.

784.062 Misuse of laser lighting devices.

(2) Any person who knowingly and willfully shines, points, or focuses the beam of a laser lighting device at a law enforcement officer, engaged in the performance of his or her official duties, in such a manner that would cause a reasonable person to believe that a firearm is pointed at him or her commits a noncriminal violation, punishable as provided in s. 775.083.

That's what is commonly referred to as a catch all.... a prosecutor will be able to make the argument that a cop was actively engaged in his or her official duties, even if they are sleeping. (Undercover work for example ;))
