Ouch! That's too bad. Might as well use the 44 as this diode, then.

Wow as bad as the 44, but almost twice as expensive? That's to bad, was hoping for a nice tight dot. Still it puts out almost 6 watts so she's no slouch.

Default Re: Thor Ultra 5W Blue Laser

I picked up a LPM from astralist and ran a few tests. One thing I found is that the output is greatly affected by the temperature of the laser. It's rather warm in my house this time of year, so I got a max of 5.7 watts which slowly but steadily fell as it got hotter. Wondering if the converse would also be true, I placed the laser in the freezer for 20 minutes and ran the test again which shot up to 6.9 watts. While I won't be doing that again, I was shocked to see that kind of difference in power with the temperature difference.

They do like the cold but 6.9W?
Everyone seems to think its a 7A75 which doesn't add up.
You got a lot of moister on the lens didn't you with the freezer test?

Yes, a cold diode is a happy diode. No doubt about it. That is why lab lasers are actively cooled. Still, for the money, I think the NUBM44 is the better choice.

IMO, with this knowledge, then an LPM recording video (even with professional/branded LPM) can be invalid if the laser's seller managed to keep the laser in a freezer before recording a measurement of the laser, right????

One can sell a claimed 10W 450nm laser, validated with videos of (several) LPM recording,
but then turns out it's only 7W when operating in a room temperature

Yes, I guess they could, but they would lose credibility real quick after a few sales than they lose all further sales. So I can't see it being a winning idea. Hopefully nobody will go down that road.

Update.

After talking with laser pointer store I got some more details and confirmed that the diode is the NDB7A75 3.5W, which has no problem pushing past 5W with no issues. The lens installed is also the G7 lens, and the more I use this laser, the more I like it. The focusing ring system is extremely adjustable and works without unscrewing the head from the laser and exposing the diode.

I don't understand your stating that the laser is able to be focused without unscrewing the head? Of course it does. There would be a problem if it didn't.

I'm stating this in comparison to some of the other lasers I've used, including the sanwu spiker where focusing is done by turning the head. Turn too much and it unscrews completely. The ultra has a ring that moves the lens and does not unscrew the head. Maybe this picture explains it better than my previous post.

The focusing ring system is extremely adjustable and works without unscrewing the head from the laser and exposing the diode.
Is a rebranded made by JetLasers PL-E Pro 445nm 5W or a good copy w. a Sanwu neam expander-- right?
Looks to be --same output, same host, same price, same everything but being resold as a Thor somethng by laserpointerstore.
