It's pretty easy, you just have to have the patience to get it right

The front end, top and sides are open, and that makes it loads easier than what I had to do with only the sides and top open.

Just have lots of epoxy on hand to start over and you'll be golden. If you really try you can probably do the optics in a weekend.

Default Re: Mrcrouse’s Tri-Diode host

Is there any way (with your current design of the 3 diodes parallel in linear configuration) to get THREE 445nm diodes to focus on one point? My guess is that the only way is through a knife-edge config where the third beam (first two can be PBS'd) must be manually focused (both angle and collimating lens focal distance) onto the target. That way > 4.5W burning power could be achieved.

I just feel like using one of the spots for "targeting" would be a terrible shame.

Eh, I think it's a better use than knife edging. More power density = brighter beam. But hey, no one cares about density, it's all about the raw power for most people; even if it is the diameter on the moon. That's why you never see beam size in reviews even though all it takes is a ruler (my personal pet peeve)

The way you explained it will work.

You don't need to collimate the beam to have it burn really well, but if you must get those projector optics assemblies from DTR and place one of the lenses in front.

Well what I really dig personally is the ferocity with which smoke billows out the side of a cardboard box or whatever when I focus a 445 to a pinpoint onto it. I can only imagine this would be twice as epic with 2xM140 PBS'd (as it got a lot more powerful for me going from ~1.3W A140 to ~2W M140) and I'm just trying to come up with how to focus all three diodes.

The PBS'd beams would join nicely (even nicer with waveplate) but sadly the third one could never get aligned to increase that beam power density... It can only be aimed to pass through the other beam somewhere.

Then again with a multi-diode setup you really do have to collimate each diode independently so it's not terribly practical to focus not to infinity.

Watching mrcrouse build one of these and the thought process he went through is time consuming and impressive. The design has many possibilites and the improvements will well define this host. Great precision is taken by mrcrouse to assure lasers are precisely aligned n the milling process. I too can't wait to see the builds completed with this host.

Me too, I love the builds that go beyond the aixiz lens, there's so much you can do after the lens.

I've got a build thread over here for one of them if you're interested:
