Default Mini-review: 3W GITD Kryton

Members of the forum,

a week's passed since I've posted a thread in the Review forum section and here I come again with one more laser inspection. Although I've promised myself not to invest in any further powerful 445nm lightsabers, I simply couldn't resist an offer which came from a respectable, well established member, GB organiser and in the end a competent builder, offroadfreak8582.

Hereby, allow me to review one of his latest builds I'm honoured to own:

3W GITD Kryton

Communication & shipment

When did this all start? Well, strictly historically taken (from what I could read), Kryton as a laser host type was introduced by Kenom, who was behind several GB's a couple of years ago. Another respectable forum member Mohrenberg's been the main man behind distributing this brand lately, I figured it'd be polite to mention his latter input in this matter. After all, the host was very likely brought out of that batch (ORF, correct me if I'm wrong):

http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/fs...ves-83187.html

I ran into current deal after reading the following OFR's B/S/T thread:

http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/al...ild-85060.html

My intention to buy off him was there already, therefore I've contacted him trying to negotiate the price a bit first. It was clear the few specimens he cooked in his laser kitchen will go quite fast, despite the fact he had to deal with a lot of hassle with the diodes. Ultimately I've decided to wait and watch if something special shows up… and it did alright!

I've PM'ed him asap (eaten up by impatience in the meantime) and we finally came to a mutual agreement. At that stage, once I "paypaled" him, all I had to do was sit down and (try to) relax. I need to point out one important detail: generally I've been in touch with ORF long time ago, my signature says there are a few more beamers in the current collection I managed to get thanks to him in the first place. Also the fact, he's based in Western Europe (EU) makes life much easier, meaning zero customs obstacles and very reasonable delivery time. Our PM discussions are usually brief, but intense at the same time, straight to the point, as it should be.
After about one week I was pleased to have this unique laser delivered to my workplace. Next category introduces the actual product.

Specifications

For the first time ever I won't upload pictures of the package. The reason being so was my impatience while opening it, after I've ruined the cardboard, disposal was the only merciful way how to say goodbye to it. Having written that, laser was well preserved in a thick bubble-wrap layer, surrounded by hundreds of white polystyrene balls/pieces.

The specs and features are clearly stated by seller in the OP, so basically a slightly adjusted copy-paste overlook follows:

Technical details:

- X-blank 17mm board (as contact board epoxied in case negative)
- IDRV3 driver set @2.25A heatsinked onto an copper bar, set-up thermally glued against driver compartment wall
- a brand new 9mm lens lightly epoxied into focus adapter = "focus to infinity" as a standard if fully screwed in
- 2x 16340's or 2x 18350's @ 3.7-4.2V
- weight of laser cca. 120g, cca. 160g with batteries inserted

Design features:

- "grooves" filled with a mix of high quality long lasting blue & cyan GITD powder with epoxy
- blank coat layer on the aluminum host body for a better look
- diode heat arctic silvered to the rest of the host

Does this mighty laser stand to its power performance? The following 2 graphs based on LaserBee 5W Ophir LPM confirm the impressive 3W mark on average within the first minute. I rather prefer conservative runtimes of 60 seconds on (head with the diode inside becomes significantly warm) and 2-3 minutes off. IMHO, life longevity and efficiency are necessary to enjoy most of this particular 445nm multiliner!

2x16340 3.7V Sibeile IMR Li-Mn 850mAh.

2x18350 3.7V Sibeile IMR Li-Mn 900mAh.

Still gallery

As usual, the DSLR Nikon D5200 served the photographing goal more than fine.

Portrait shots

Batteries used for the measurement purposes.

Macro shots

Front/laser head.

Back/click button.

Inside the click button.

Enter the host tube.

Focus adapter with 9mm lens.

Diode glued in copper.

Glow-in-the-dark

What makes this build visually specific (as the title indicates) are four body host groove lines, two of them with a blue GITD tone and the other two in cyan version. The characteristic Kryton head is equipped with three close-to-each-other running lines powdered in blue colour as well.

Beam shots gallery

My favourite review area. Exposure time of 20-30sec applied most of the time to get the best out of the photons. Apparently the blue-violet border is present, specific angle & light conditions during photo-shooting apply.

Indoor shots

Blue flame.

Blue torch.

On the sofa.

On the microwave.

Tripod super clamp support.

Coming closer.

Outdoor shots

Pics were taken with laser in lying position or tripod super clamp support.

In the dark...

Distance.

Final words

I'll repeat myself when going back to my previous reviews or multimedia threads, but it's absolutely fair to point out a positive experience when buying off offroadfreak8582. I consider this review not only as a form of thanks for this great build and fantastic deal at the same time, it's also my tribute to his dedication and undoubtful contribution to lpf.com community. Easy & fun to communicate with, advice & information capable, a true laserist.
Another special thanks goes to Kenom & Mohrenberg, propagators of the Kryton host design. Without them it wouldn't have been possible to get my hands on ORF's final laser.

Thank you, offroadfreak8582!

Thanks all of you who are reading and watching the thread, comments are welcome.

Default Re: Mini-review: 3W GITD Kryton

Hey gismo!

Awesome review! Glad you like your build! I could not rep you due the systems limitation but i will remember it!

Beautifull pictures! the GITD is amazing, isn't it? i noticed scratches on the front of the focus adapter. This is very common with krytons because they are stored in an upright position. This way dust cannot get onto the lens. If you hate it you can also polish it (or i can do it)

Also you may open the laser for pictures. Carefully twist open the head. Don't worry about breaking it i will fix it for free if it does. (Exception for you) when you close it again pre twist the head one time couterclockwise so the wiring is ok when you screw it back in.

Normally krytons are direct press. Since these were not available anymore and people still wanted 9mm 445's i milled 12mm holes in the head and thermally glued the copper module in.

Thanks bud!

Greetings,,

Blaster: I'm sure you're a happy owner of a Kryton as I am. Your support is appreciated!

orf8582: GITD + Kryton = great photogenic results. I'm glad to see you like this mini-review. Hopefully I haven't crossed the line with so many pics uploaded. Regarding the further inner Kryton investigation: I've unscrewed the head carefully, access to cables with diode was visible, but I've rather decided not to go too far. Your generous offer in case problems occur is welcome. Also, don't worry about the scratches, I've come across some of them on the host surface as well. Once it becomes very noticeable I'll contact you for sure. Cheers!

As usual, great review - and I love the photos.

So jealous of that laser, especially with the GITD work. +1 for sure.

cheech226, sinner & NO4H99: very kind of you, gentlemen. Support of forum members means a lot to me.

I'll try to keep the forum updated with another laser indoor & outdoor gallery in the near future. Since I'm moving house this weekend and with no internet for 1-2 weeks I'll be less active, but will keep an eye on the forum (lunch time at work computer) and come back later with more pics.

EDIT: Just one extra shot with my "personal camera touch" (a partial fingerprint visible).

mhemling33: thanks for the encouragement, will try to keep it up, indeed

KRNAZNBOY: just a decent DSLR, lots of time and patience, if shooting outdoor a good weather. Cheers for the comment, too!

EDIT: one last extra pic from the original photo session to be added here. I didn't upload it the first time, because the Kryton's beam wasn't aligned the way I wanted. But in the end the effect came out like a blue welding scene.
