Default Laserworld LW-50K Galvo set. Review

Laserworld LW-50K Galvo set. Review

Technical data:

• Deflection angle: max. 60° optical
• Scan speed: up to 45.000 pps with 5x11x0.6 mirrors.
• Input: analog +/- 5V
• LW-45K PSU: +/- 24V DC 1 Amp

Whats included in the box :

2 x Scanners
2 x Replacement mirrors
2 x Driver board
1 x Scanner mount
1 x power supply (PSU). (Sold separately.)
2 x Cables driver to scanner
2 x Cables driver to PSU/input signals
6 Terminal lugs to connect the cables to the PSU
1 x User manual

These Galvo’s where shipped with the 5x11x0.6 mirrors.
These should give a max scanning speed of 45 k @ 5 degrees.
Only the 4.5x10.0.5 mirrors should enable the scanners the reach there max speeds of 50kpps at 5 degrees.
But we wil test this further into the review.

First impressions Drivers:

The first thing that caught my eye is the high quality look of the drivers.
I’ve seen and owned several Chinese build galvo kits.
And most have fairly cheap looking drivers and connectors.
This of course does not say anything about speed.
But is does say something about quality and attention to details but also price.
Personally I think the db9 connectors on the drivers and galvo’s are great.
There easy to connect and the cant come loose accidently when rewiring the projector.
Also the drivers are mounted on decent size heat sinks.
Most of the china build galvo drivers don’t come with heat sinks at all.
And they do really need good heat sinking.
Not only because of cooling issues.
But also because heat influences the scanners performance.
So I consider the heat sinks on these drivers as a big plus.
I’ve only seen proper heat sinks on high end Cti scanner amps in the past.
Also both of the drivers have there own safety fuse in case the current draw gets to high.
And it wil disconnect power to the driver and galvo’s.

First impressions Galvo’s:

Can’t really say a lot about these.
The look like your generic style galvo’s
The have the db9 connectors on board for easy and fast connecting to the driver.
These galvo’s are outfitted with the standard 5x11x0.6 mirrors
These mirrors have a efficiently of 98 %.
This was not noted in the specifications but was measured using my coherent laser check and
Using my 100 mw 532 nm Cni test laser I’ve only lost about 5-6 mw of power after all the mirrors.
So that’s pretty good.
The mirrors fitted to these galvo’s are broadband mirrors.
These are coated for a range of between 400 nm -700 nm.
So any visible light laser should work fine with these mirrors with minor losses.
Another big bonus is that the set is send with extra mirrors.
The small fragile mirrors break pretty easily when you’re not careful.
Also mirror damage can occur when there not properly cleaned or cared for.
But my advice would be to don’t touch them except if u really need to for some reason.
So an extra set is always handy to have around.

The galvo mounting block has a steady and heavy feel to it
Ofcourse this is exactly what we want.
The mount allows for more then enouch adjustments to be made.
And can be screwed to the base plate with 3 screws that are already provided and screwed into the base of the mount.
Speed table for the 5x11x0.6 mirrors.

30 Degrees 17-19 kpps
15 Degrees 25-27 kpps
5 Degrees 37-45 kpps

Now for the important part
I’ll let the pictures do all the talking.
In most of the pictures u will see the ilda pattern.
Since this is still seen as one of the industries standard test frames for turning scanners.
But I’ll try to keep u awake with some other frames to

Demo vid

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMzDOAKX2_M

sadly the cam cant realy keep up.
in reallife the vid is virtualy flicker free

20 Degrees @ 25 kpps

15 Degrees @ 30 kpps

5 Degrees 45kpps

Stil very nice clean lines no round edges et etc

At 40k 8 Degrees

Even though these scanners where not yet factory tuned at a specific speed.
It seems the perform very well at all speeds and scan angles.
There are no obvious over or undershoots in the scanned output.
All the lines are perfectly aligned at all speeds and scan angles.
No distortions or over or undershoots are seen when running the scanners on their rated output and scan angles.

Also at 40kpps the scanners and drivers become warm.
But the highest temp I recorded was about 35 degrees.
And this was at 21 degrees room temperature running the amps and galvos for 30 minutes.
In most cases a new set of scanner might require some fine tuning to get everything looking just fine.
For more info regarding Scanner / Galvo tuning see

http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...ead.php?t=3707

And

http://www.laserfx.com/Backstage.Las...Scanning1.html

Both are excellent guide for tuning your scanners and understanding how they actually work.

Conclusion:

So in conclusion.
These scanners seem to do a great job.
The price is good for what u are getting.
Scanner performance is as advertised with the 5x11x0.6 mirrors installed.
The drivers are high quality and have a proper heat sink.
The extra mirrors are a big bonus for those among us that may be a bit clumsy.
So overall I can recommend this set to anybody.
And it can compete just fine with the other top performers like the dt40 en dt25 pro set.

Small note :

Just before testing these my own galvo's and dac died because of a lightning strike .
So i had to borrow a dac and laser to do this review with.
When a new dac and galvo's arrive ill post a comparison between the 2

Rip 30k scan set
Rip Easylas
Rip 100 mw cni green

Very nice scans. My crappy ScanPro20's can't do images for crap. Even at reduced speeds lines just don't match up, etc.

Maybe I'll have to get a better set some time in the future :-/

Price? I've seen your reviews here before, and they are good, but why can't you post a price? I just can't understand that. There aren't even any prices on the Laserworld website. I don't buy anything if I don't see a price.. especially not from China. I'd really like to buy these, they seem very nice.. I just think it's crap that i have to email someone for a price when it could just as easily be posted here or (imagine the concept) on the company's web store..

I've done the step-by-step tutorials for tuning, it made it a bit better but it's still not very good

Sent an email off inquiring about the price two days ago.. still no response. Must not be too concerned about selling any of these. Too bad, too. They seem quite nice. I spent my $$$ with someone else, though. Early bird gets the sale, so they say.

I went through all kinds of BS to get their price list too back when I was first considering their displays - the LW-50K lists for 269eu (with dealer/quantity discounts up to 22% available) which isn't so bad, or you can save your pennies for their CT6210 60k scanner set, just a mere 1177eu!

(ElectroFreak - if you want a copy of their dealer catalog/pricelist in .pdf, PM me with your Email)

ok that should be fixable

everything seems ok *except for the circle and i can see that one galvo is running faster then the other.
so a bit more tunning should get u a good image.
ive seen more chinese galvo's that do the ilda patern perfectly except for the cirle in the middel

what are your scanner rated for 20kpps at how mutch degrees ?
and how big are the mirrors ?

i have a 20k set here to and the mirrors are very big *compare with the 30 and 50 k ones
