This is fascinating. My best (and only surviving) KD50 is still peaking at 72mW and remaining very stable for like five minutes at a time.. If the module would be touching the body, it could probably keep a high power untill the battery dropped too far.

But that one only uses a 200mW pump diode. This one would seem to use a 300mW pump. It's weird, that it's only rated as 30mW of green. I definitely need to get one. Could be exactly what i'm looking for. The KD50s are just too inconsistent.

My DX 50 mW can't even light matches when using a external optics.

Lighting a match with a 30 mW rated product is a long shot - i think it might work with good optics, a lot of luck and on a good day, but its not something to really expect.

The unit is still going strong btw, played with it draining a whole battery in an hour or two tonight, no problems so far (knock on wood).

This one would seem to use a 300mW pump. It's weird, that it's only rated as 30mW of green.

It's odd indeed, perhaps the crystals arent all that efficient or its just rated consevatively. I'd say this is as bright as a good KD50, but have no means to measure output power.

In any case i prefer a laser that has a decent stable output over one that has a higher peak output but that drops to much less within a minute (as the pen style lasers often do).

Thanks for this review. It has sold me on getting this laser. Im actually going to be getting a few of them as my friends are all gaga over my <30mw green laser pointer and they want one also. Seems like this is the most reliable option for a cheap but good powered green laser.

Thats nice! Once you get them, it might be nice to compare serveral side by side - i wonder how much variation there is in output power. As far as i can tell its still the best thing on the market for $30 or so.

AMEN to that BENM. Best less than $30.00 my wife ever spent on a laser for me. I LUV her soooo much :-* (of course i was consulted prior to purchase) ;Dphoenix77 ;)

When I get them, I will definitely charge up all the batteries and test them all side by side. If any are bad it should be easy to tell compared to the others.
Its funny, I never even noticed that my green pointer had issues till I read these forums and found out what a good laser is supposed to be like.

IR looks pretty good in that review. I own that laser as well, but it is different from the one DX sells.

Also, i'm sure it does not have a separate IR filter, but the coatings on the crystal set are probably filtering some of it out. It does leak IR light visibly when driven at too little power to produce any green, but the IR isnt well collimated. Perhaps that explains his low reading, the aperture probably blocks a fair amount of infrared too.

I just got one of these lasers about 2 weeks ago. My first laser >5mW, so I'm a relative newbie. I've been having quite some fun with it.

The internals of mine look different than that of the OPs pics though. I also tested the current and it seems to draw around 350mA from a nearly full charged battery. Also, the laser module (or whatever it's called) has "Newwish www.newwishlaser.com" printed on it. Not sure if that means anything, but I hear the name come up now and then. Mine does do some mode hopping when initially fired up, though not always, and I'm not sure why (like I said, I'm a newbie).

If anyone wants some pix of mine, I'd be happy to oblige.

Please do take some pics - especially of the inside!

It seems you have gotten a different laser than i did - did you order the exact same model at deal extreme? It is possible that they are now shipping a different laser under the same part number, that would be something to note with this review... i see the price has dropped to $22.91 now as well.

I haven't noticed any modehopping in mine, but these things differ between individual modules - its likely to have something to do with temperature.

It say's I need 10 posts before I can post actual links. So just cut and paste this address.
lordsofquake.net/~ToxIk/dx7883_30mw/

My laser does some weird things. When I first turn it on, it's fine, nice and bright. Then after about a minute, the power output drops noticeably. But, if it turn it off then back on, it's nice and bright again. However, after another minute or so of use, it goes through what I'm guessing is a mode change. There are two videos in the link exemplifying this. One has the beam going through a 30x magnifying loupe I have as a makeshift beam diverger. After the beam goes through it's mode change (or whatever it's doing) the beam actually hits the edge of the lens, so a bunch of the light output is lost.

My dad liked it and since it was only $23, asked me to get him one as well. When it arrives, I'll let you know if it's any different.

That's a totally different laser allright - very lame they sell it as the exact same product. The circuit board looks like the typical newwish produced at least up to a couple of years ago, and this was made in a number of configurations. It's a circuit designed to use optical feedback, but that is often not connected in reality.

The thing seems to be modehopping from the video, could be due to thermal problems.

Too bad they are now selling this, the one i got is a better design if you ask me. One thing is that you now don't know which one to expect. Did yours come in any kind of packaging? Mine was SXC brand, in a printed carton case.

Mine came in a snap-lid box with foam inside and spaces cut in it for the laser and a battery. Doesn't say anything on the box, but inside it only says "Laser Pointer".
