808nm IR Pen Style Laser

Okay folks - this is the real stuff right here - I am gonna hit you with the quick and dirty specs, and let YOU check this sucker out - man is it beautiful !  Here is the specs - it is a Pen-Style laser, 808nm IR, takes 2 AAA batteries, like a standard CNI pen does, NiMh are recommended simply because of the cost factor, but alkaline, and Li-ion primaries are okay in this laser as well.  It has a locking tail cap - which prevents emissions in the event of an accidental button push - which for this laser, could be catastrophic !  It also has a red LED that lights up when the power is enabled, and the laser is operating - an excellent emission indicator in my mind - that way you don't even THINK of looking down the barrel to see if anything is glowing or not !  If that light is on, your goggles should be also !  The recommended duty cycle is 60 seconds on, and 20 seconds off.  This laser is very well heat sinked, but you will greatly extend the life of the laser by following those guidelines.  Another thing about this laser - Goggles made SPECIFICALLY to block IR wavelengths are not only recommended, but you will be unable to purchase this laser from the vendor without also purchasing goggles.  I think that is an excellent policy, and even if I didn't know the vendor personally - I would say that is a VERY smart move.  The vendor is Pseudonomen137 - he consistently goes out on a limb to purchase direct from CNI and others to try to bring in the highest quality, and affordable lasers, and this time he went above and beyond and invested in some IR lasers for resale, to carefully screened customers.  Don't expect to be able to purchase one of these lasers if you tell him, I want to melt my ex's tires from a stoplight without being caught - well...maybe ?  No !  That is up to him - my job is to test and review this laser to inform you all what he has to offer, and then you and Pseudo can hash out the details.  I will be answering questions about the lasers themselves, and items related to my testing of them - everything else goes to Pseudo ! Okay, enough lecturing - you all want to see this laser, what it looks like, and a brief demonstration of some raw power from it !  So, without further ado - here are some pics of this most excellent looking laser....

Okay - I lied....FIRST, the goggles !

Another Goggle shot, showing the OD rating -

The Sticker on the outside of the box - Oh, man - my hands were almost shaking when I opened this box - this is pure excitement right here...I have been waiting to physically see one in person for a loooong time...and here's my chance :

Here is what lies in waiting inside that box - note the keyed tail cap at the end of the laser....

Okay, THAT was enough teasing, don't you think ?  Now for  a tiny taste of the good stuff.....a two-part video showing off just one of the many uses for this laser -

I will be posting more pictures tomorrow, as well as more videos - I will show off some of the other thermal experiments you can perform, as well as try to lase some NDYvO4/KTP Crystals - just to see if I can make green outta this bad boy ! :)

Thanks a lot Greg! I'd just like to add two things onto that:

1. This is not IR, this is 808nm NEAR-IR. What does that mean? It means you can actually see the dot of the laser - it'll look a very deep red, and very faint. A 1mW red would probably eclipse it, but so you know you CAN see the dot for aiming.

2. Speaking of seeing the dot, you can kinda see it in this vid (camera cost $3.5k so it dang well better render the colors right instead of those white blobs you get on most cameras) of it taking out regular steel wool (this is a feat I could not get my RPL 300 to do WITH a lens, so I'm pretty impressed by the burning power of these lasers):

I can't see jack with the 1.1 watt 808 I have, but that's because my glasses are OD10.. no chances with this pointer. But the VLT is >90%. You can't even tell you are wearing glasses at all, except you can't see the dot, there's no color tint or change or anyhting, they look like clear lab safety glasses.

Without glasses I can see the 808 dot, a 5mw red blows it away, but the 808 dot is a very deep cherry red color. a 690nm pointer looks very bright red compared to it. a 630 is obscenely bright red.

All the camreas I have make it look like a bright whitish dot.

I also did use a dead leadlight I have and stuck the whole MCA up real close the the cmount and it went green :) It's very hard to align, so sitting there twirling it around produces brilliant flashes of green, not really a beam...

How much do IR goggles usually run?

Are these any good?
http://www.rli.com/products/eyewear.asp?Heading=Laser_Eyewear_and_Goggles&Item=E-G-LOTG-ALEX
OD 6 for a large range but vlt is only 30%
http://www.safetyviz.com/lotgalex-laser-glasses/p_4689.html

Pseudo's goggles are OD 3 with vlt 40%?? good for >400mW
Is it good enough for 1W?

*edit* Found it. Looks like this to me
http://www.safetyviz.com/lgm-millenia-laser-glasses-315019/p_4648.html
vlt is only 30% and not 40% like I thought because Isaw a similar OD2 one in the same wavelength with 40%vlt.

That's a nice review Greg ;) I've had the pleasure of playing with one of those owned by Merlous at the UK meet. All I can say is I'll be getting in touch with Carter when I'm ready to buy one.
