...I'm very sorry this has happened. It's too bad this happened on my first sale to any LPF member ever:(
Don't kick yourself, my first BR, built by a very esteemed LPF colleague, "LEDed" within my third use (total lifetime in my hands: 90s...).

Sometimes those diodes just kick the bucket and/or as hard as it may be to believe, the driver pots can be jarred during shipment (at least that was the theory in my case).

i'm sorry for the OP of course, but I wanted to make it clear to him that it does happen & more often with 405s then with 660s, it would seem...

I'm very sorry this happened to you I built the laser back in December and have had no problems with it. Maybe something happened during shipping or like all diodes, it just decide it's time has come.

regardless of what happened or how it happened. I will take care of it.
flaminpyro lives in the same state as you. I will pay him to fix it for you.

Again I'm very sorry this has happened. It's too bad this happened on my first sale to any LPF member ever:(

Now there is a GREAT seller! I would buy from you!

Wow, OP, I am sorry about your bad luck.

I hope everything goes OK with your project!

Hey rpaloalto, what 6x diode was that?
I have done quite a bit of reading, and appears that SF-AW diodes cannot take anything near 170-190 mA with good life.

I remember seeing one member reporting his SF died in 2 tweeks of normal use... @160 mA !!

I was planning to buy $30 SF diode from O-like but my recent findings turned me down in my 6x project, as $50 is a bit too much right now.

Good luck to both of you in resolving the problem!

If you can wait a little longer, when you do start saving for the diode definitely wait for a GGW to either come down in price, or wait until you save a little more. They are definitely more robust and will last longer :)

Sorry to the OP, very nice to know Rpl was quick to reply, and Flaminpyro is great with lasers and will have it all fixed up pretty quick since your in the same state.

Hopefully you get it all sorted ready for your science project.

This is a problem with the 10440 cells I have run across this many times, this is why I no longer build any lasers that use the 10440 cell. THEY SUCK !!!
Your 10440 cell may read 3.89 volts and look good but as soon as you put a load on it, it crashes, this has happned to me many times, but never again!
I will check it out when it arrives. since you did buy this laser as a used laser and not a brand new one with a new laser diode in it, you don't realy expect John to pay for the whole repair do you, I'm sure he would be glad to but is it realy fair for him ? I think a fair deal would be a 50/50 split but that is up to you guys....and then again maby he just ows you a battery....

No but I checked the battery and it measured 3.8v.

Yeah I understand that it was used but then again the seller should cover a repair if it happens with in the first 3 minutes of use on the first day.=( If its just the batteries Ive got 2 coming that are protected so they should work better.

You should have asked for someone to lend you a 6x for a day from the beginning...

...if you want to drive here I will put in a new GGW diode while you wait then you won't miss your school project.

What the heck's going on around here, what's up with all this VIP service, boys???

Wow!!! +1 REP-DA-MAAAN!!!

You know it could be the battery do you have a different one ?
That's very true, I just had a really crazy experience with a slew of "failed" batteries that although holding their rated charge of 3.6V, were not able to power my laser properly... :gun:

No but I checked the battery and it measured 3.8v.
see above...

Btw, aren't these supposed to charge to 4.2V? 3.8V isn't charged!

4.2v is the peak for that battery but it still should have powered up on 3.8v. and not have been super dim.
