Talking 1.6W 445 Mohrenberg 18650 Host+Heatsink Kit Review + Tutorial

Alright folks. Here is another great host that wont cost you an arm and a leg. Total Build Cost $128 W/Battery. This is a host offered by Mohrenberg and I though that I would give a small review.

Also if you would like to see more of my reviews and tutorials please visit my compilation page.

http://laserpointerforums.com/f51/dt...tml#post759223

*Host Images*

Here is what you get for $20.
Host capable of holding 3X10440's or a single 18650 without any modification to go between the two due to the huge spring.

The host has a good sized pill area making it a easy build. Has a contact for the positive only in the pill.

The head of this unit is also very large allowing for a big heatsink capable of handling a high power 445 or 405 build's heat.

Here is the heatsink custom made by Mohrenberg. It is huge and he does an awesome job getting a mirror like finish on the side that shows out the front.

For informatoin on how to press a diode and solder wires to the driver check out my How to Assemble a Hot Kit TUT LINK

A special note to those using a microboost to power this build. The microboost unlike the flex or groove cannot have the negative come back in through the driver negative out. On a flex you can just short the negative pin and the case pin for the negative contact. On the microboost the solution I went with on this was to run a third wire from the case pin back to the driver negative input. If you try to run the negative in the driver negative output you could damage the driver and possibly your diode to. Here is a link that may explain it better than I can. http://laserpointerforums.com/f55/re...tml#post781362

I just wrapped the driver in some electrical tape and soldered the positive wire to the contact in the pill.

Then you can screw the head on. Remember to put some pressure on the heatsink so that it does not spin while screwing the head on.(The Ezfocus adapter shown is from Jayrob and I always keep my G-1 lens on it. Not part of this kit)

That's it. Now you are ready for some fun.

The clicky on the handle really makes it easy to operate with one hand. And it has a good feel to it especially for being an inexpensive host.

Here is a vidoe of it in use.

*Beam Shots*

EDIT
I now have one in red with the Gold Dollar Driver Heatsink Mod putting out 1.6W with a Flexdrive that is set to 1.5A. I have run it as long as six minutes without any heating issues. Here is the a link to the Mod.
http://laserpointerforums.com/f51/fl...tml#post796360

Here is the six minute run.

EDIT

I set the driver @ 1A on this unit and am getting 1076mW with a G-1 lens and 890mW with an Aixiz 445 glass.

405-G-1 Test

Aixiz 445 Glass Test

The total cost of this build is broken down as follows with shipping.
Host+Heatsink $20
Microboost Driver $26
Aixiz module $5
Aixiz 445 Glass $15
A140 Diode from Daguin $50
Soshine 2800 mAh Battery $12

Total Cost $128

Hope you all enjoyed the review on the $20 Mohrenberg Host+Heatsink.

Mohrenberg keep up the great work. Can't wait to get my hands on your new kits.

I'm looking forward to the two I ordered showing up; looks like a great host for the money. Now I just need to figure out what to put in them

Hey Dtr, nice review and pictures there. I will use them to assemble my laser too. However, there is something I did not understand there. You say:

I never do this. I only connect the negative output of the flex to the negative pin of the diode and leave the case pin untouched. What am I missing here? Please enlighten me

The case pin is used to complete the negative circuit from the battery.

The setup can work like this for a flex or groove driver.

Normally with the flexdrive setup you would bridge the case pin and the negative pin to provide the negative contact from the host.

I will just give this post by Jayrob it does a good job of explaining the microboost setup

Heh, just curious, have you killed any of the pixels on your tv yet?

I've got a dead pixel in the bottom left corner of mine from a 6x about a year ago.
If a 175mW can kill pixels from across the room, i wonder what 1W would do to the television.

So is it even necessary to wire in the - lead from the driver to the diode? Since theres no - lead attached to the driver input side it seems like it has no function. But im no electronics expert so I could very well be wrong.

On the flex drive there really is no need but I am used to doing it with the microboost since they have to be done that way. And I have found that somebody trying to emulate this with a microboost may not understand why it is not working.

Actually with my latest build I did have to run the negative driver output to the diode even with the case and negative pin joined with solder and nothing connected to the driver input...no idea why but it did not work until I did.
