A pot don't have any polarity. Take the center lead and then connect it to one of the other two. The third one is the "out" and the center one is the "in" or vise versa. I dont know if there is any good battey for testing laser diodes though.
To late, i have just the diode, no housing and hooked it up to my " Electronics Learning Lab"! all i got at 3 volts was diffused but blinding red light. I think i killed the diode. Then i decided to put it up to 9 volts, 6 AA batteries. And it shined for like 50 seconds were i couldn't look without blinking super fast then one of the legs melted. :-/

The diode is gone for sure, but NEVER look in the diode! Your eyes, that's what matters.

No, i didn't look into it. Why would i do that. Blinding light was an exaggeration. The reason i hooked it up to the 3 volts was because it was my first harvest and wanted to make sure i had the right diode because i couldn't find any info on the web on how to do it or by asking you guys. And the last part was kind of an exaggeration but the leg did fall off, not so much melted. The diode was burnt out so i thought i would play around with it. I had it shining at a wall 15 feet away. I am sorry for exaggerating but i was exited when i wrote it. Also, are purchasing the SenKat diodes even worth it? because i have my driver board and all i need is the diode. I have 2 cases, 1 with fans and i dont know if i should buy the phasor diode even though it is much more expensive. Thanks guys and sorry.

You shouldn't have bought the SenKat diodes, well at least not yet. Recently he got a bad batch of diodes which aren't 16x diodes, but 12x diodes. So you won't be able to drive them with the usual current people used to drive them at or they'll die. It looks like he has fixed the problem and he'll be getting another shippment of the good diodes.gardnerv said:

Actually, it doesn't matter that he put 9 volts to it. He killed it because of too much current. You can run a laser diode on basically any voltage over 3 volts as long as you keep the current right.goldfingerfif said:

You can't increase one without increasing the other. Run 9 volts into a diode from a standard battery and we are talking amps...lol. By limiting current like we do with the 317 we are also limiting voltage.
