Re: Yellow Pointer Project - Cool!

I just wonder if it has two separate switches. That's the main thing. And that it would power both lasers at the same time.

It would be easier to swap the red for a blu-ray, and get a turquoise blend! :)

Green doesn't wash out blu-ray quite as easily as it does red. I'll bet it could be done using the diode, PBS cube, and turning mirror from a PHR sled. That is, if the light can power both lasers at the same time...

P.S. I saw in the pictures on their site that it can have both lasers on at the same time, so I just ordered one... I want to mess with it and see what can be done! :)

id really like to do this build...but for now im kinda broke...and im just not sure of how to get the cap+compartment for the dichroics...having the RGY in one go would be really great, being it a pointer of 7mW output power it could be used for presentations and such...

Damn! im in love with this build... :yabbem:

i was sure i had repplied yesterday... oh well...net must have been slow at that time.
If i in fact could get to do this build, i wouldnt quit till i got the yellow goin smoothly^^
i know it can be done (got at least rog's and jay's testemonials) so i wouldnt quit on somthing i wanted so badly.
Im just kinda intrigued, ok im a bit new on the forum as member, and Rog seems like a illuminated person, that "doesnt walk among us"...like this build and the 7 color one and i think much more...he misteriously gives us the "plans" and a few messiah here like jay and sightfx that spread it around xD (no im not really very religious...but it seems like that to me, at least til now)...an untouchable identity xD

btw, great job in this build and all others...throughout every project and tut everything is very detailed and "schweet".

Welcome to LPF!

Glad you like the build...

Yes, rog8811 shows us some amazing stuff. This 3 color yellow project is one of my favorites. But it can be very frustrating getting the alignment. Of course it has to be perfect for a nice effect.

My method of 'micro adjustment', was using pins...

After I got the adjustment almost perfect, I used a toothpick to build up silicone glue on the sides of the mirrors, and under the sides as well. (the glue is stuck to the inside walls of the aluminum custom tip)

Then, I could poke a pin into the silicone glue here and there (trial and error) to make very minute adjustments. Once I knew where the pin would need to be, I would cut the tip off, and use fine tweezers to insert the pin tip into the area. I have it 'dialed' in to a single dot at 70'. It is pretty much perfect. I ended up using 3 'pins shims' to get it right.

But of course there is more than one way to succeed. This is just what seemed to work for me...

i needed to read it 3 times to understand it...so u just "flooded" the whole customized tip (leaving the mirrors and lasers paths clear of course) with silicone?? at least the mirrors stay put i guess.

But that an ingenious way to do it!!^^

i was thinking in starting by getting both mirrors as close as possible to 45º and parallel, outside the tip (if the lasers in fact got straight out of the pen with ~0 rad of deviation), then id fixate them in anyway after getting a rather raw approximation inside the tip. then for micro adjustments it would be harder. my only concern, would be in the batteries...as id need them to be running...id need to get a couple or 2 of those...if only DX sold one like that guy got from amazon..

but im kinda broke now...maybe christmas will set a shining star, that will lead to this build^^

Not 'flooded the whole tip', but just some on the sides of the mirrors, and under the sides.

At the front edge too. (see where I have one of my 'pin shims' there as well...

wow...yeah thats exactly what i pictured in my mind^^ thanks for the upload!!

ur making me eager to make this build...and all that silicone makes the laser kind of shock proof, the mirrors stay in place like that really well i believe.

Yes, but if your serious about this build, I also recommend taking the laser apart before you do this beam combining mod...

You want to make sure that nothing can move inside. I found that the red laser was fit kind of loose. So I used thermal adhesive to make it stay put.

Also, I used thermal glue to put the head back on. I realize that It would be very difficult to take apart if I ever had to. But I wanted to make sure that nothing would move.

Slipstream:You can get N size batteries from taking apart a standard 9v (corrected to AAAA)
Thanks for the tip on taking apart the 9V to get 6 AAAA's
I have a hell of a time finding AAAA's for my borescopes
I had to drive all over town to find them and then they cost almost $1 each. Using this tip I can get 12 (2 pack of 9V)
for $4.00 or so.:yh:
Thanks Slipstream:bowdown:

blue lasers, I am sending your Yellow pointer custom tip with cap and some copper wire today. (Monday)

The other items that we discussed are also included in the package.

Be patient with this build. It is very difficult to get them perfectly aligned...

I give in. I bought one of the lasers from dealextreme (along with some cool stuff I stumbled upon). This should be fun!

It's really nice if you succeed...

But it is pretty frustrating to get it right.

And I apologize for my price on the custom tip and cap that you see in this thread. But they are a lot of work to make, and quite honestly, I don't even want to sell them!

It' a pain to make because the little cap has to fit perfectly, and the inside boring on both ends isn't fun either...

But I had to show this thread! Because it is such a cool project! And I was kind of proud of myself for successfully getting it right.

That Rog sure comes up with some tricky stuff...

I'm going to try and make a cap with the help of my teacher, or the machine shop guys at work first. If I can't get it done I'll get one off of you. This is such a cool project :)
