Why did you do that?

If you're good with soldering, you may be able to replace the component. If you're not, you may be out of luck. Hopefully someone will have an idea as to what that is...

Look like a small SM cap as its polarised, indicating its a an electroytic , but your mspaint blob hides its value.

I don't think the cap popped... the component on the opposite side of the board from the cap does have a burned-out looking hole in it, though...

It's a tantalum capacitor directly at the output.

You did not connect the batteries directly to only that. You connected them to the laser diode directly too.

You should start praying it survived your little experiment.

What did that poor capacitor ever do to you ?!

:D

Could you solder on a replacement ? In hopes that it's the only thing destroyed , though...

You could replace it if you can solder well. You just have to hope you didn't blow out the ic or the diode

You will need to replace the Cap and I'm quite sure...
the Laser Diode...
You put the full potential of your batteries across the LD
and Tantalum capacitor... The batteries had enough current
to cook your cap to carbon...
There may be other parts on the Driver that could also be
damaged as you applied power to the driver's OUTPUT...

Just changing the cap will not resurrect your LD...:cryyy:

My thought exactly, but we do not know the polarity of applied power, if the power was reversed , it could still fry capacitor but perhaps , just *perhaps* the diode got away.

It's still worth a shot at repairs, if you ask me.
