Re: Tutorial: How to combine lasers

Ahhh ok that makes more sense now... I will check out the sites.. And yes Thanks so much for your help.. I am SOO am going to build one. Need to find someone willing and with enough time to machine for me..

Great sites and much more explainatory than ebay.. I dont want to buy something I cant use.

OH MY!!! Wow I can increase the amount of cash I can spend 3 fold! haha That is still alot cheaper than a thorlabs cube..

I am just playing with my ggw cube. It also seems to put out more beams can split them in six depending on where I input it.. usin the pl450B..

Re: Tutorial: How to combine lasers

Not trying to argue semantics here, but like my issue with Things calling his reference Wiki a "tutorial" in the beginning, this is more of a reference guide than a tutorial.

A tutorial goes through a step-by-step procedure on how something is done. This guide, as informative as it is, simply lists different methods that exist, and their pros/cons. A reference guide is definitely useful, but it falls short of a tutorial.

You're right. This really isn't a tutorial, I changed the thread name. Thanks for the correction

No problem :)
Yeah, Thorlabs and Edmund are very expensive, but very high quality. I usually buy old Edmund and Thorlabs optics that pop up on ebay when I see it. There was a good deal on 3$ FS mirrors NIB from Edmund not long ago.

Thanks bud! I could've used this reference a while ago when I didn't know anything about knife-edging or stuff like that. The diagrams are helpful for visualizing the process.

Yup. Knife edging can be done after using a PBS. As long as the beam is | shaped if using multi mode diodes; If it's + shaped then part of the beam will be clipped.

Does this help?

Think of it like this: Light travels in waves and if both modules are vertically polarized, the waves crash together in the cube and it doesn't work.
One has to be horizontally polarized so that the horizontal waves and the vertical waves and knit together.

Knife edging can be done anywhere in the process, as it does not require anything of the beam. Glad my diagrams came in useful :)

Ah, I was wondering who made them, they're great diagrams! I knows it's after the fact, but I didn't know who made them, do I have your permission to use them?

Fantastic guide!

Need to spread some rep first, but IMO, this is 100% sticky worthy. Question comes up, not super often, but it does, and explaining it is a PITA... this is perfect.

Those mirrors are really cheap and great for testing and spyros, but their transmission is rather low, so it's best to get a good FS mirror for lab builds.

ok Good to know.. On a high power build do I need to watch out for acrylic cubes or are they all of a decent glass? do any of the mounts actually work in a build or should I fix the stuff myself? And what is the talk about a brass channel down the middle of a build? Does Brass not warp with heat? Eh just some of my Q's And I got all these tiny tec's Who will spoon feed me the info I need on them? I have found that they can reck the protected batteries I baught.. drained em dead..

Just don't use SF-11 for 445nm, use BK-7. I don't know about brass, I used acrylic to isolate the optics.
