FWIW, I just had a look to see what's available on the EU market and what the pricing's like:

Buffalo BR-816FBS.....   264
Pioneer BDR-203BK...... 220
Sony BWU-300S........... 299

That's in Euro,  but already includes 20% VAT so it should "resemble" USD prices (excl. sales taxes).

LG's still on 6X here (GGW-H20L) so we must be a bit behind the U.S....  :-/

I've heard of Buffalo but of course it can't compare in popularity to the other firms:

I agree...

'Once you cross some 'reasonable' mW threshold'! :cool:

I am personally very happy with 375mW's in my tiny Pocket Mini build! As you can imagine, it burns like crazy...

Thanks, I like the finish and heft of the stainless steel host.
I made that driver, it's a step-up converter like the flexdrive, built around the TPS61200 chip, got the idea from a thread here at LPF.

I have used the EF-S 60mm once or twice in the past. It's a fine lens, handles great.

I have a 40D, the macro shots were made with a Sigma 150mm/2.8. No special lighting btw, just dumb luck :)

Well I don't know that Sigma lens, but I can see that is it ultra-sharp, congratulations  :cool: I went for the EF-S 60 for weight, price as well as a focal length that can be used for portraits. As for your luck-in-lighting...  :eek:

Well, it looks that the proposal to find 50 bucks donors for further tests has been... a hole in the water! :D

AS A NEW TOPIC HAS BEEN OPENED IN THE "Blu-Ray & Violet Lasers - 8x BR DIODES", THIS DATASHEET WILL BE NO MORE UPDATED HERE. FOR ALL DATA RELEVANT TO THE 8x BR DIODES REFER TO THE NEW DEDICATED THREADS.

Now we have four fourteen (14) members owning an 8x BR laser; herewith annexed is a summary (nicknames in alphabetical order) with some data relevant to their "prototypes";

I think it would be interesting (or not?) to follow their progress (and of the eventual future 8x owners) upgrading more info from time to time..... :D. I would like it's clear that I'm not nominating myself to do this job, it's just a starting proposal/suggestion.... a lot of senior members can do it better and with more important info.... just to give to the Forum Community a general feeling of what these diodes can do.... :)

P.S.: I have collected the up mentioned data from the messages published till today on this Forum Topic.....but I can be wrong....

I have deleted my reply #398, just to avoid to fill this topic of unnecessary messages...

What a beast! I really need to remember to dig through all my laser stuff when I get home and see if I still have one of your heatsinks laying around. All this 8Xness is not my wallets friend.

I know I had to settle for less power with a FlexDrive... But as you pointed out, it is so small and still very powerful! :D

I figure it will last longer at this current too... (I hope)

Here's a beam shot outside at night! Now, there is no smoke or fog, but the camera shutter stayed open for a few seconds to capture the beam. So it is not this bright to the eye, but it is very visible at this power! :)

This is my Pocket Mini/BDR/405-G-1 build at 375mW's. The face of the cave on my pool where the dot is hitting, is about 30' away...

I just finished putting everything together the other day and I am very impressed with this diode. I am using a BDR diode with Jay's 405-G-1 lens, 3405 MXDL host, and a DDL LM314T driver. I have it set at 280mA for right now but I plan to turn it up a little. Don't have a meter but it is extremely bright and the beam is very easy to see. Also burns pretty much anything instantly.  :D

From the table above I do not understand hows JayRobs diode outputs 375mW at 292mA and Intro74s diode outputs 420 mW at 255mA. Less mA and high power output ??
