If this is a real 12x, I will definitely get one.

Is it possible to tell what diode it is by using a PvI graph ???

Or do they have similar efficiencies ????

I was going to do this, this morning, but I had a water pipe burst last night. Needless to say, I am tired and very busy. I'm taking a break to have some breakfast right now. Someone pray to the plumbing gods for me, please.

I am willing to bet that it is the same diode...
I've got some information stating that the improvement in writing speed is 90% due to a more efficient vibration dampening system, which makes the process more precise, then a tiny bit of upping the current on the diode.

But I hope I am wrong.

I would prefer an expensive 8X to a dead 12X.

I am sorry to bring you this news I was really looking forward to this myself: I read a few sources about the new low vibration system which makes it more precise , so they can bump the disk turning speed while writing.
Right now I give you this source but it's not very extensive, I will search for the more precise information:

NEVER apologize for honest information. The purpose of posting these things (and the reason I asked c0ld to sticky it) is to help everybody. If this is just a souped up 8X then we can save everybody the extra cost of this drive.

The information I got was in Italian... I see several US sites mentioning the clue- feature of this drive being the innovative vibration dampening system, and nothing else. It makes the writing process more precise so some of the energy that was wasted because of the vibration can be utilized to spin the drive faster. It just makes perfectly sense. If you combine that with the statement that they can't guarantee 12x speed with all media, (probably just very high quality perfectly balanced media), it should be pretty simple deduction. I do still hope that the output of the diode for the same current levels as the 8x is higher but I doubt it. I don't see though any problem doing a graphed comparison to see current vs mw of the two drives' diodes. That should tell us something...

I am never spending more than 12 hours off of LPF again. I can't believe I left and this happened. I can't believe this could be the same diode. It's like waking up on Christmas and not getting the one thing you wanted. Hopefully your info is wrong LuxIgnis. I'm sure we're all hoping... :cryyy:

Good luck testing it by the way Dave! Work your magic with that slow warm up test style! I take it this will be tested with a 405-G-1 lens?
