well, we could buy 5$ lasers too, instead of several hundred dollars.. same point..
so yes, a 10w would indeed be cool! not sure about transportable, though ;-)

I imagine 25 diodes / fiber / batteries can fit inside something the size of a rifle.

Or at least the size of a rocket launcher rofl

I need to look more into fiber optics... there is a lot of potential there for some cool projects..

plus I'm going into Fiber Optic Telecommunications for a major... so I'd better be doing my homework.

I like the idea about the fiber bundle. I'd make a laser rifle out of it hahaha

Imagine like 25 of 12x diodes inside. Even if they end up outputting 400mw each after loss, that's 10 watts of bluray rofl

If you're interested in coupling a laser diode into a fiber, LightPath's catalog will give you some ideas on how it's done.

They have special colimators with sockets for fibers and a module attachment on the other end.
They even figured out some new ways of coupling the output which results in lower losses.


Only problem is, once you get excited enough to ask for a price, the answer will kill your excitement almost instantly...


They want 68€ for a single lens! Never mind an assembly...
They do give quantity discount, but for them, quantity has a different meaning, than for us..

The two sleds i have here are LG 8x's you sent me... I should have a Pioneer sled somewhere around here, from FrancoRob's 8x build, but i probably threw away the tiny heatsink... :(


If you have a Pioneer diode that is not extracted from the heatsink yet, and know how to pull it out without demolishing the heatsink (it can be just squeezed a little from two sides, and releases the diode), that heatsink would help me enormously when comparing sled efficiency!

I just pulled my second 12X for testing. The diode is still in the heat sink. I will remove it in a less destructive manner. "Squeeze-squeeze" certainly works. It is just not as fast as "snip-snip." ;)

The first 12X (and another LG8X) sled is already on its way to you. I can put this little heat sink into a regular envelope. However, did you want the second 12X sled as well? That would require a "package." Also, it is still in the drive. It is simple to harvest the diodes from these last two Pioneer drives without even removing the sled from the drive.

Also, IIRC somebody wanted to examine a "complete" drive to look at the vibration dampening system. If this is the case then maybe they will ship you the sled after they examine the rest of the drive

Awesome, may I ask what kind of current you plan on feeding it? 400ma?

That is what we are trying to determine. We are still unsure if this is a new diode or simply a high efficiency 8X. We may have one part of the answer when IgorT finishes his 8X testing this week or next. After we get that answer, we can look to see if we need to push one of these to death.

Wait, so this is still the same "12X" drive that has the anti vibration technology in it?

But is still without a beam circularizer?
