PGL-III-C/A hosts

I've taken apart an old one with the side key a while back, but I was wondering if anyone has advice on taking apart the newer PGL-Cs.

Also curious about taking apart PGL-A's as well. Anything I should know before diving in to pull out modules and stuff? got a few broken ones a while back and thought i might play around in them for fun. (safely of course)

PGL-C->From what I have heard, the modules are pretty securely stuck in there (really helpful, eh?). Other than that, all I know about the internal modules is the design. You can find pics here (post 42). It's funny- several months ago, when i found a 473nm crystal set, i thought up a module with adjustable crystal holders via tiny threaded rods, and then a case would screw on around the whole thing- Now look at the pics of the CNI module. Exactly the same, except they lock down their crystals with screws-they stole my idea! (except, ya know, they have been around since way before i thought of the module).

On a side note, pretty crazy how simple the modules are, isn't it? Hardly different from your everyday 532 (except of course, the crystals are 30x more expensive).

Please keep us updated on this- I would love to try to figure out what is wrong with yours. What wavelengths are they? Could be as simple as misaligned crystals, or maybe severe as a broken/melted crystal, or fried diode.

yeah, the screws aren't just for securing though they're used to adjust the alignment of the crystals as well based on pressure.

And I cant tell you the wavelengths...cuz I dont know for sure. they're out of alignment
also want to do this to an old yellow. I'd like to peek inside and unravel the remaining mysteries i dont know as to how SFG works. I have done minor corrections to yellows before...but i'd like to try to understand the actual process. hopefully someone will contribute :beer:

When you take it apart, try not to take the optics in the head apart, especially the on/off shutter. That is obscenely difficult to put back into place, at least for me.

Wanna know how CNI does their 589's? They glue a 1319nm coated crystal to a 1064nm crystal. (I'm not even kidding either)

That's normal. A lot of dpss processes get their crystals fused with optical compound. It keeps them aligned and protects the optical surfaces. Downside is then everything is on one heat sink

I have a PGL III -A 532nm Green. I was wondering if this could easily be made focusable?

I didn't expect it to be that way for SFG when I found out

I realize it's somewhat normal for regular DPSS...

MY WHOLE LIFE IS A LIE.
Here i was, thinkin that they put a coating on the crystal that lases both lines simultaneously. BUT NO. I oughta contact red optronics, ask how much their 1319 crystals cost. I'll be pumpin out 589's by the truckload :crackup:

As long as it's lasing both lines... But I'd imagine there is tons of power loss by doing it this way.

Yep, hence the horrible efficiency of yellows. CNI's 80mW 589 have what, a 3 watt pump, no?

Yeah I think they're 3.1 watts
