can someone please tell me what an open can diode is? i see it everywhere but i dont know what it is

Of the DVD burner diodes harvested and used so far, the diodes that have been "long open can" have out performed all other types of red diodes available. That has been the common denominator of the most powerful single-mode 650nm cheaply available diodes to date. Others have been close and are still very good, and other are cheaper (so possibly even more power/dollar), but "long open can" are the best.
