New to lasers, my laser is not working!

Alright so my wife got me a laser for Christmas and I was using it it stopped working. I tried different batteries and I tried to press the button harder, etc and nothing worked. I ended up taking it apart and putting it back together to check everyting. It still doesn't work but it looks like you can just change the diode and the circuit board in there (driver?)

I am still trying to figure out all the parts of this. Also the crystal came off and I was trying to figure out the best way to re attach it before buying a new laser setup. This is a pen type laser and it has a laser set up that looks like this posts lasers without the end part screwed onto them

What do you all think?

You could *probably* change out the whole module, meaning the whole deal there, the brass cylinder+board. But be careful disassembling, as you could end up cracking off one of the segments that holds part of the DPSS crystal structure -- they're usually glued together in those pointers.

Really though for $26 you could probably get a new pointer alltogether, but if you just want to do it for the experience if the module looks the same size you could probably go ahead and do it.

Remember that 100mW is enough to damage your eyes, though. The one you had was probably not as powerful.

The one I have says its 100mw but I am guessing its nowhere near 100mw. It didn't ever light matches or anything. I could sort of see the beam in a room during the day and at night you could see the beam clearly.

I was looking at getting a whole new pointer but I want one around 50-100mw and it to actually be what its rated at. I was looking at

Optotronics Product Details

or something like that but if I could spend less that would be even better. I just want something where I can see the beam during the day and clearly at night, also something that will last and is the size of a pen.

Thanks for the help!

Optotronics is a good place to look. Jack, the owner, is a member of this forum, they've got a stellar reputation, and I'm hopefully soon going to be getting an RPLB from him. (Though I think he's been away for the holiday...)

So yes, I'd go ahead with that. Just at 100mW be sure to be careful.. Eye protection would probably be in order, too, if you're going to do burning and stuff like that.

I was actually trying to figure that out. If I am just shining it inside and random things and using it outside at night do you need eye protection? Do you usually just need it if you are going to be staring at the beam for a long time or if you are going to play with mirrors?

I wasn't sure of that. I'm not really interested in burning anything I just want it use outdoors mostly and some indoors.

If I don't want to burn anything but I want the beam really bright which power should I get?
