Hi, I want to make a green laser strong enough to light matches, pop balloons, cut tape, etc. I was wondering if any of you could help me. I live in California. My parents don't let me buy anything off the internet though, so that's a big set-back for me. Any suggestions?

Sorry, but you can't make a green laser without the proper equipment. You are basically stick with red, violet, and IR for building, if you want green you're going to have to buy it.

Green lasers are generally far too complicated for anyone to build themselves.

They're what are known as "DPSS" lasers, or diode pumped solid state. These use a powerful infrared laser at 808nm, shine it through a Nd:YVO4 crystal to increase the wavelength to 1064nm, then pass it through a KTP frequency doubling crystal which converts it to 535nm green light... In order to work at all, these crystals must be aligned with micrometer precision.. the slightest fraction of a millionth of an inch out of alignment and it won't work.

Try this thread for some writeups on how to build yourself a *red* laser... this will be several orders of magnitude easier.

Yes. Honor your parents' wishes.

Alright, thanks for the help. And Dave, what wishes? They are only paranoid that someone will steal their credit card information, which is a completely justified reason, but they just take that too far.

Oh, and one more thing. Do any stores sell Aixis laser modules? Or are they only on the internet?

*Corrected.

Get a burner and make a DYE laser.

I didn't say anything about their reasons. You said that they wouldn't let you buy anything off the internet. Their "wish" is that you NOT buy things from the internet. "Why" they do not want you to do it is irrelevant. If you disagree, you can try to reason with them and/or show them how they can protect themselves. If those don't work, eventually you will move out and you can do whatever you want to (within the law). In the mean time my suggestion is that you honor their wishes. Trying to sneak a way around their wishes will only end YOU up in trouble.

PayPal is a good alternative. You/they can set up a "clean" account that is only used on the 'net. You just put in what you need and do NOT link it to any other accounts. If you are in the US, PayPal is rolling out a way to use "one use" credit cards with the funds from your PayPal account. None of your personal information is sent to the vendor. They are going to have to trust PayPal, but that is no more problematic than trusting their bank.

Peace,

If I ever met PayPal in person, I'd punch them in the face. No good beatnicks.

Anyway, a red or blu ray or infrared is the only laser you could build, and buying equipment off the internet is pretty much the only way to get the parts for it.

I know they don't want me to buy anything off the internet, which is why I was wdonering if I could make a laser without purchases on the internet. My parents still wouldn't trust PayPal, they think it will still get there information stolen.

Guess I'll just play with my RC stuff then.
