light scatter?

Hello,
I originally posted this in the Experiments and Modification section and am going to restart the thread here as it seems more appropriate.
my first purchase was this little pocket pointer. i am only on my second battery and have not abused it in anyway.
i paid too much for this on ebay, i have seen them for sale on other websites.
but it seems to me that the beam is no longer as focused as it was when it was brand new and has what i believe to be light scatter now. i did unscrew the top which has a protective lens and that made no difference to the scatter, then with out the battery installed, i unscrewed the piece what i believed to contain the focusing lens. appeared there was a white material around the lens for glue, heatsink, or what ever purpose. could the white material be flaking and putting particles on the focusing lens?
is this indeed what light scatter looks like or is this something else going on with my laser?

i am basically looking for a solution to this in terms of mod or upgrade to the lens ?
what is the cause?

could i replace the lens with an upgrade, what would be a good choice fortype of lens, supplier ?
or is it possibe to clean the lens?
or is it that the lens is not the problem with the light scattering away from the beam it self.

below is a short video of the laser and scatter.

thanks,
lf

Is that one of those Romisen 30mW lasers? They usually use some cheap plastic lens in a black screw-on holder that screws into the laser module. These lasers seem to lose focus or cause excess scatter if bumped or stuff like that. It happened to mine. In the end, what I did was chuck the module, and turn it into a 635nm laser pointer using other parts. I know you don't want to hear that since it's not a solution to fixing your green laser, but mostly what I'm saying is that you should look for a different laser to use since this is just a problematic one in general. You get what you pay for, or less in this case.

If you don't live in the US or Australia you can get them new for like $20 at Deal Extreme, but I'd spend a little more and get something better.

no,
i dont think it is a romisen.
there is one on ebay like i got,, it is item # 380085738447
PREMIUM GRADE ASTRONOMY GREEN LASER POINTER BLACK
the one picture in the ebay ad shows the dot on the wall with out much scatter.
unlike my short video which shows light splatter.

UPDATE: I was looking DX site and saw a 30mw green laser shaped like mine that they called Romisen. but mine is only supposed to be 5mw. could be they are just using the host with different guts.
