Would there be any special difficulty building a laser outside of the standard laser pointer/flashlight housings? Basically I want to build a laser pistol for no other reason than to say I own a laser pistol and I built it myself... I have a BB pistol that may very well be a perfect housing (if I remember the internals correctly). I'm figuring for a first time DIYer I might want to experiment with some of the less dangerous lasers before dealing with anything that can burn something.

Another question what is a reasonable range to expect some amount of burning at? I'm hoping to be able to burn a paper target at at least 5ft but would be very happy with further. 5ft should be enough to get some wow I can't believe he bothered to build that factor.

For building up to this project is there a laser in a range like the little cheapo laser pointers that I could project dots with without the goggles required while I save up the money to buy them (small bites gets things done) (I read somewhere that I wasn't sure was reliable that 5mW would be reasonable)?

Truthfully just sounds like a fun exercise my soldering skills and get a neat toy out of it.

No problem with putting a laser inside a housing that makes it into a ray-gun. I wouldn't want to encourage you to use that outside of your basement. Someone might get the wrong idea. We usually stick to a flashlight styled host available from members here or on the commercial sites.

Sure, just buy an aixiz module and use the 5-10mW laser it comes with... Hook up a few batteries and place a switch in the trigger. When you're ready to move on to bigger lasers you can replace the driver and diode out of the original aixiz module with something like a long open can and a rkcstr driver.

Your big issue will likely be in mounting the switch... You're going to want to find a pushbutton you can mount behind the trigger so when you pull it, the laser turns on.

Ok I'm going to sound stupid but I don't know anywhere that I can buy an aixiz module with the diode in place.

Thanks for some reason I couldn't even find it on ebay (I think I've just lost my ebay mojo).

You can also get these really cool torch lighter/laser combos at a mini mart that sells novelty items. I actualy have a couple and they are kind of cool. Its on my list to add a little more horse power with a long can and bigger battery supply. I will lose the lighter option but it will be a neat build. They run about $5.00.
