Hi, i have a laser diode ripped out of a pretty old dvd-burner.
I watched several tutorials about making a laserpointer from it.

they're always talking about a "driver".
Whats that "driver" for? do i need it? where can i get it cheap or can i make it myself?

Welcome to the forums!

You should read a bit more before diving into things... The forums are packed with all the info you could ever need, you just need to find it. Here is info for building your own driver. The FAQ (the one that is labeled READ THIS BEFORE POSTING) mentions why you need a driver, to prevent voltage spikes and to provide a regulated current for the laser so it doesn't just burn itself up. The search button is your friend. Read.
