Pulling out PHR's, split with pliers. Pioneer 115 I use a file and/or nippers. Only pulled a few pioneers apart months ago and from memory none of them ran at all :(.

I've not tried doing this myself (yet, i have some sleds on the way) but i would think pressing them out with a vice and some carefully places buts of wood/soft metal would be the best option?

A few other options are melting the surrounding metal off with an arc welder, using some kind of explosive or just taping it to the bumper of your car and go raming lamp posts.
The possible methods are endless...

For the PHR 803T I make a small cut into the center/edge of the heat sink with a
razor saw... being careful not to hit the Diode to weaken the heatsink.
Then I take 2 pliers and carefully twist the ends of the heat sink to break the cast
metal. :)

These are the only ones I've worked on so far..

I use the old plier method. Two pliers, one on each side, and twist in opposite directions. Works like a charm ;)

I agree, 2 sets of needle nosed pliers, 1 on each side, with a quick twist in opposite directions, & the 'sink cracks right in half, & most of the time the diode just falls out, the rest of the time, if it's still stuck in 1 half of the 'sink, I use a fine jewelers screwdriver to pry it out the rest of the way gently. This method hasn't failed me yet ;) rob

I usually just snap the sink in half with pliers.

Though I've taken apart a couple of IR sleds that the heat sink needed to be filed before the diode could be removed.

yeah, make a cut all the way through till you hit the diode. then get a small flat headed screw driver put it in the cut and turn. the heat sink will just drop off.

Most of mine also have that little extraction 'scar'. I always saw a little notch in the heatsink, and then, using 2 needle nosed pliers, I grab each side of the heat sink and apply force so that the heatsink opens and the diode falls out.
