help with wiring

If the laser diode had a fixed resistance then yes, you could just use another resistor to limit the current. But a laser diode, like any other semiconductor, changes it's resistance depending on how much current is flowing through it and on the junction temperature.

This is why you need a laser diode driver.

As for the Youtube video, Youtube is for entertainment and nothing more. Anything you see on Youtube is crap. Never ever trust it. (unless you believe that there are 1500 AAs and a unicorn inside every car battery.

It really isn't hard at all. Plus you said you had a friend that would help you. Once you see how easy it is you will be experimenting like crazy, and once you see the beam you will have the laser bug.. ;D

BTW...be very careful...you really should get a pair of goggles especially for burning. They will run you around $60.00 shipped. You can't buy new eyes.

That has to be one of the more stupid videos I've seen posted anywhere.. Anyone that actually tried it (meaning they're that stupid), should be fitted for a Darwin award..

Re: doing this w/o the regulator.. Unless you want an LED that looks like a laser diode.. I wouldn't do it

The regulator circuit isn't hard, and there's plenty of pictures around.. You'll be glad you did it.

That's why there is no useful videos on sites like "break"... that 2nd dude is too funny "it's a bunch of BS mate, fake"

too funny.. the only legit one is the 9v one.. it has AAAA batts in it (which are basically pointless)

yes that one is very easy and i understand almost all of it the only thing i dont under stand is the POT the picture is a little weird

There are two of the three pins on the pot that always maintain the same resistance across them no matter how the pot is set. the third pin is connected to the part that moves when you turn the knob. Connect the third pin and one of the other two to the Vout pin of the LM317, the only remaining pin is connected to the other resistor/s.

backontopic again...remember when you hook up your driver you will have to find the max resistance of the pot which is determined by the way you hook it up. Then turn the resistance down from there until you find the right spot.

This kinda shows how the pot should be.

also i have two small questions

what do i use to power this i think it sayed it needed 6V and i know i could use a 6V hobby battery but what about anything smaller

what is i going to put this is i am thinking of a hobby box but i am not to sure or an altoids can
