Hey everyone,
First off, I have done a good amount of searching for this, but I've found two sources that say different things, which is why I'm asking this.
So, I'm waiting for the parts for my first build. The diode is a LPC-815.
If I'm not mistaken, according to http://laserpointerforums.com/f51/diodes-compilation-all-diodes-data-one-thread-45042.html, the middle pin is a case negative. Here's where I get differing instructions.

http://laserpointerforums.com/attachments/f51/37253d1332813479-what-solder-connection.png and other sources tell me to solder the case negative to the driver, and then the DRIVER negative to the case.

But the Flexdrive Manual http://hacylon.case.edu/ebay/laser_diode/MicroFlexDrive_V5_manual.pdf tells me to solder back to the driver, but to solder the DIODE negative to the case.

Which one am I supposed to solder to the case?
Thank you

I'm pretty sure the pinout is different on red and IR laser diodes.

.positive

.negative

.case
Top is positive, middle is negative and botto
Is case pin.

Is that for red or IR?
And here, does the case pin go back to the driver, or straight to the case?

Both and are you building a lab laser or a hand held?

What host are you using?

If your case electricly connects your diode housing (and therefore diode -) to the rest of your host hook it up like the first pic in the flexdrive manual

If your diode is electricly isolated from the rest of your host,
you will have to hook up an aditional gnd connection to your driver gnd / diode gnd

In this situation (LPC815) you can solder the diode-negative = diodecase-negative = driver-negative = host-negative together. They are all the same.

So what does sending the negative back through the driver do?

I'm building a handheld, and the host is the C6.

Just connect all the 4 wires of the driver and you will be fine. The diode +/- to driver +/- and battery +/- to driver +/-.
