Why doesn't someone that has a scope does a tutorial on how to use a scope in laser building? That would answer many questions. I still don't have a scope so I can't really say if it's a good thing to purchase or not, but I would love to see how it can be used.

because nitric acid etches copper faster than other less hazardous concoctions and yes, fast enough oscilloscopes can detect slow enough transients, periodic events, dc voltages, phase offsets, some digitial models can do fft, decode can, rs232 and other interfaces and many other fun things.

Thank you Phenol. So is nitric acid used to clean wires and such before soldering?
What kind of oscilloscope do you have?

Good save on that driver issue btw :gj: probably saved a few people a burned out diode.

it does make copper pink again, but i only use it to etch hand-drawn pcbs. when concentrated, it releases brown NO2 gas, which is particularly obnoxious and suffocating.
i also had a bottle of hydrofluoric acid, but i kind of forgot where i put it...
at home i have an ooooold HP dual channel 100MHz scope. At work i have 1 quad channel 300MHz Tek and one dual channel 300MHz tek with 16 digital channels, and also one compact 60mhz Tek, plus one 100MHz analog Tek, plus one tiny, almost pocket size, analog 500khz tek from the 80s.

^^^OMG you got some scopes there. Why don't you do us a tutorial on how to use them for our hobby?

This is the most frightening thing I have read in a long, long time

Peace,
dave

the last thing i remember was etching glass business cards on microscope slides 3 yrs ago. its only a matter of time before the plastic bottle leaks(again) and ruins all things made of glass

Man... you gotta relax... You'll give yourself a coronary...
It's only pixels on your computer's screen...

Jerry

Jerry, you misunderstand me. I learned a long time ago the futility of being upset or angry at things that are out of my control. Now, this philosophy is, of course, not always successful, but my comment that you quoted was the epitome of me being relaxed. I was quite literal that I do not care in the least what rails this thread rides any longer. By not caring, I am relaxed.

 to all!

Back on topic .. A bench top lathe would be nice .. I think it will be my next "investment" for the home .. Harbor Freight had them on sale recently .. but I missed it .. __________________
As a guy who's been a machinist for 16 years, I'd stay away from those Harbor Frieght lathes. I looked at one and if you just want to give your money away I'd be happy to take it.:D but that's up to you. You could put a little more with it and find a used quality one somewhere I'm sure.

To phenol: are you sure you don't mean hydrochloric acid (muratic). I use to mix chemicals for a cleaning supply company. I refused to go anywhere near HF (hydrofloric acid).

Agreed that HF sells mostly crap... there are a few things that can be bought there, but most of the time it's tools that will be good for sporadical use and not very precise.
I wouldn't purchase a lethe there at all...

HF just opened here, so they are doing that whole "Stay open 24 hours a day and sell everything at a loss until the local shops are run out of business" strategy ..

I never did buy it .. but seeing it there.. with such a low price tag .. almost convinced me :)
