Hi, I´m new to this forum and I need some help making a driver circuit.

I´m trying to make a Blu-Ray laser pointer with this diode 150mW 405nm Blu-ray Blue Violet High Power Laser Diode - eBay (item 280459764179 end time Apr-02-10 18:10:21 PDT) (but I might go with this one PHR-803T HD-DVD laser lens with violet laser diode blu-ray [PHR-803T] - $10.49 : Modwerx Shop )

The problem I´m having is that I used the driver circuit on the picture (from kipkay) with the 150mW diode and it worked at first, bud then it ruined the dioed.

So what I´m asking, can any one help me make a driver circuit for ether one of the diodes so I can run them at their maximum power? (the smaller the circuit is the beater)

NitWit,

The driver you are attempting to build is based on LM317 chip, which means it's current setting is set by resistance across OUT and ADJ pins.
You do not use the potentiometer, nor 1ohm resistor.

You need to calculate the resistor to place instead of pot, by the following formula:
1.25 / (desired current in A) = resistance in OHM

In your case, you want to power your PHR diode with 100 mA for long life (80mW~ )
Or you can push it to 120 mA for good burning power, however lifetime is questionable.

You need either 12.5 ohms for 100mA, or 10 ohms for 125 mA of current.

To test your driver, you can place SIX 1n400x rectifier diodes in series with one 1 OHM resistor instead of laser diode.
If you measure mV across the resistor, you will read mA that flows through your test load (Ohm's law).

Also, read through all the stickies and FAQ topics here for more help and info (Newcomers section) and
WELCOME TO THE FORUM,
Enjoy your stay here!

What blew you Laser Diode was the KipKay modification of the original
drawing.. It allowed too much current to be supplied to your LD...

If you got that Drawing from KipKay then he stole it from the DDL Thread...
and modified it... The 1 Ohm resistor is in the wrong place in the circuit.
This is the original drawing from July 2007 that KipKay plagiarized...

Read this Thread about the DDL Driver before attempting it again....

Buy your LDs from ModWerx... or any reputable LPF member...

Here is the DDL Thread....

and this is a correct Schematic of the DDL Driver to use...

Also read the info on this link... It was put together by a very
knowledgeable LPF member...

It can be done - Laser driver

And for God's sake..... Stay away from any Laser related projects from KipKay....

Cool it worked.

I'd rather wait until he posts some more idiotic info on

As a general rule, double check anything on the web, if you stand to lose money!
There is so much bad and just plain wrong info. available.
If you want professorial help, come to the pros.(here or Sam's)

If anyone mistakenly posts incorrect info here, one of our members is sure to "Gently" inform you of your indiscretion.
Which is a good thing!!! :D

If "Joe-smo" posts something on their website and it is incorrect, no body will correct them, or if you try, they ignore or block you.
