Does this drive have a diode?

My friend took apart his laptop's DVD burner drive and gave me this.

I know it's blurry but please help. Are either of those two things pointed at the focusing blocks the red diode? Is this usable at all for a burning laser?

Probably, but is there any way you can get a clear, macro shot? Chances are 1 is the red diode and the other is the IR.

Thats better :D it should have a red diode but it "might" be in 3.7-8mm form factor.

It looks like the red diode is the one on the left

Well, it looks like it's smaller than a normal one. Will it work with an AiXiZ housing and as well as a full sized one? That's all that matters.

It depends, can you harvest the diode and then measure it with a ruler? if its 5.6mm then it will fit in a aixiz, if not then jeff aka flaminpyro can sell you a smaller module (I think) you will have to PM him

I can't harvest it now but I measured the block that it is in and it is maybe 4 mm wide. I'm screwed AiXiZ wise right?

Yep, aixiz wise your screwed although I will get in contact with Jeff and ask him if he can mahine you a smaller module

I also have this which has a diode. I don't know if it was a DVD drive or a burner though. Will it work?

I think the diode shows clearly.

I need it to fit in a Star Trek phaser for the Kipkay hack. Will it work? Maybe the other drive will too so I can use the AiXiZ.

Btw you shouldnt be posting multiple comments ;) Just use the edit button to add info

The diode there looks like a 5.6mm, but you have to actually test the diodes to find out if they are red or IR

You also need a driver which limits the voltage and current going to the diode

I wouldnt normally reccomend this but, get two slightly drained aas batteries and hook them up to the diodes + and - using a chart which you should be able to find somewhere on the forum, it might be IR which you wont be able to see with your eyes, But if you put a camera infront of it you will see it

Goodluck

Yeah I know about the driver but if the 5.6m diode is red will it definitely burn? I think that is the only diode in this assembly so it is probably IR; I just freed it so time to test it.
