Does anyone know, or have the ability to measure the actual diameter of an Aixiz?

They're supposed to be 12mm, but I'd like to know if anyone (perhaps a heatsink expert) knows off hand what their general actual size is?

Anyone with a micrometer, and/or knowledge of the tolerances? I'm trying to design an Aixiz-sized module, and I'd like it to be generally size-compatible with the hosts and heatsinks we use around these parts.

The Aixiz module is 12mm diameter. I read somewhere long ago that the tolerances for the modules are +/- .2mm.

in my experience they are just under 12mm. and the pressfit part is almost always not the same size as the pill. if you don't have an answer monday i will measure 2 so you have a comparison

edit. if you have a harbor freight near you, can pick up a digital caliper with .000" precision for about 20 bucks

I have a micrometer here but unfortunately no modules to measure. I picked the micrometer up on sale for about $10 at Canadian Tire. You can sometimes find them cheap at Princess Auto too if you have those out East.

I have found there can be very large differences between the diameters of two seemingly identical aixiz modules. I cannot remember the range of diameters for the modules I have, but I recall that it is quite large. I found this to be extremely problematic for making press fit heatsinks.

I only have 3 modules on hand ATM. All 3 measured 11.90mm with my digital calipers.

I just measured 5. They were all either 11.86 or 11.85mm. (digital caliper)

As you are seeing with the posts that are coming in, the tolerances on these are atrocious.

Not only will you get variation from module to module, but you will also get variation between the module head and the rear portion of the module!

These are not machined. They are stamped and plated.

To make matters worse, different batches come from different manufacturers

Peace,
dave

Hey guys,

Thanks for the input. Upon reflection, I think there is a much more useful question I should have asked instead -

If I'm designing a module that I want to be able to fit into the standard heatsinks that we make FOR aixiz modules frequently on this board, what diameter should I target? Should I target 12mm, 11.85mm ?

Presuming too - that there will be some tolerances at play from whomever I source the part I'm trying to design from.

try 11.9mm, how about it?
So is this gonna be a "9mm diode" aixiz-compatible pressfit module head?
So you can (have to) use an aixiz back, an aixiz lens and focus adapter to complete it?

Or are you trying to create the whole module shebang?

They are pretty bad indeed - lets just forget about the rear part of the module since thats rarely used in builds... that piece often isn't even cylindrical.

If you need to mount it in a heatsink, i'd say the best way is to work with a setscrew and some thermal paste, in a hole thats slightly larger than most aixiz modules are (say 11.95 or so). Thermal paste and some pressure from a setscrew will overcome a module that is 0.1 mm too small, but ramming one that is 0.1 mm too big into a heatsink will be nearly impossible.

I just got 11.89, 11.93, 11.94mm on three different Aixiz module front ends.

Yup mine are all over the place. 11.8, 11.93, 11.79.

I have made a few heatsinks in the past, and for all of them I have used an imperial bit of 11.79mm (I think thats 15/32"). It's usually a tight fit, but not too tight you cant remove them by hand. I would aim for 11.8 to 11.85mm.
