I saw the kipkay video and decided to make one, but not before reading here that I should use a driver, at this stage I'm just gathering materials and knowlegde. With that said I'm going to make this driver laserpointerforums(dot)com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1185701612 . Now my question is, will this laser daedallasers(dot)com/lasers/laser-diodes/bare-red-laser-diode.html , work with this module daedallasers(dot)com/superb-hosts , instead of using the Aixiz module, since I can get the laser diode and a module at the same place.

Re: DIY Buring Laser

None of the links worked for me. :(
I think the blank module IS an axiz module.

The links didn't work cause I can't post links yet, so you have to add w w w . and change the (dot) to a . and I think I already killed a diode by hooking it straight to two AAA batteries, but it was only a cd burner, thats why I'm going to make the driver, to hopefully make the other diode last.

The IR diode can't tipically handle 3V and can't handle as much current as the red one either.I killed mine the same way thinking that it's the same. The red one still lives though.Hooking it up directly to batteries doesn't instakill it, just gives it a hard life. And some diodes decide it's better to end it ;D

Re: DIY Buring Laser

I tried the laser on batteries before I found this site, but I don't need to worry about that one too much, it was only a cd burner, but I'm gonna look at the dead/damaged cd burner with a FLIR camera and see whats it doing.

It's probably being a LED. ;D

Re: DIY Buring Laser

Well with the naked eye, NOT looking directly at laser, I tilt it to the side to aim away from my eye, I see just a red glare, and it gets real hot.

Re: DIY Buring Laser

you need a heatsink, and if you used a CD burner its going to be IR, which means you wont be able to see it real well, at most all you'll see is a dim red light up close, don't look into that light or you'll beam your eyes right outta your head

Re: DIY Buring Laser

I knew not to look into the laser, I have those dinky keychain laser, which have a warning about looking into the laser, so I heeded the warning from them for the cd burner and what exactly is a heatsink, I know its something to remove the heat, but what is it made of?

You can use the blank module on that site and it definitely looks like an axiz module. ;)

If you don't get goggles and are unlucky enough to get hit in the eye it is going to cause permanent eye damage. You need shades, gregs got some really good ones that are blue and will
stop RED light from hurting you. Also, the goggles help you when burning because you can see the
dot clearly without glare.

Re: DIY Buring Laser

I'll keep those goggles in mind, cause like I said right now, I'm just gathering materials and knowlegde.

Edit: Now that I can post links, I'll redo what I typed before.
This is the driver I will be using http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1185701612 and I planning on getting this laser http://daedallasers.com/lasers/laser-diodes/bare-red-laser-diode.html and this housing http://daedallasers.com/superb-hosts . Now my question is will those two work together so I can make the kipkay inspired burning laser?

Re: DIY Buring Laser

Anyone, would that housing work with that laser?

That's not a "housing."  That's a module.  It holds the diode.  You need a housing with a heat sink to hold the module.   That module will hold that diode, but it is not all you need.  Even if you just want to make a lab style, you are going to need a heat sink

Peace,
dave

**EDIT** . . .and KipKay didn't inspire burning lasers

When I said kipkay inspired, I just meant it gave me the idea. For the heatsink, what are some good ones that will work with the module mentioned before, or an Aixiz module?
