I am posting what I learn in that thread for all the new people. All the tutorials I have seen on this site so far only make sense for people who already know what it is about, which defies the point, they leave so many unanswered questions its ridiculous. I am trying to answer those.

I have had a bad LM317 myself.
It failed me when torturing a LOC, I were using a 12V 500mA walwart, and the breadboard driver refused to give more than 600some mA.

The quality of components nowadays is a scandal.

Toaster is screwed given the real wold behaviour of electricity! So random at times!

I really have no advice to give here. It can jump up and bite you out of the blue! Given that it can do this, my best guidance would be to leave it alone completely.

What do you think forum?

Ooo, living life on the edge!

The point of this site is to expand on electronic understanding relative to lasers. We are not here to teach totally uneducated people like yourself the ins and outs of electronics, or to impart the oh so basic skills for you to build a laser. You, or anyone else, can actually do that bit for yourself. I just wish you'd do it on another website instead of polluting this one with less than 101 understanding! (For those who know me, that is the closest I've come to a direct insult in my whole time here!)

Toaster barely heats my bread so fails in so many ways IMNHO! :evil:

I say you have a good point.
In order to work with electronics you must be willing to accept that e.g. Ohm's law is really just a guideline and even if you do things right every time, your results will vary wildly.

I'm not sure I agree with a newbie to electronics taking a step by step approach and building a functional class 4 laser is a good thing.
It's like building a jigsaw puzzle, if the pieces are all numbered and color coded, you never improve your pattern recognition.
When I first got here I figured "I'll just make the cheapest, most powerful laser I can and not bother with anything else"
Now, a couple of months into it I am on a first name basis with all of the computer repair techs in town, I am learning about as many DIFFERENT kinds if circuit I can find as well as coming up with some of my own, I have about $500 worth of electronic junk in the postal system at any given time...... The jigsaw puzzle has a lot more to offer than you see at first glance.
Better to have to sift through hundreds of old threads and learn from others' mistakes than to have it spelled out and not understand why you do things this way vs. a different method.
Experimentation is great!!! (well, with electronics it is )

^ Experimentation is great ..... for the fun, for the learning, and, overall, when you don't have already a guideline from some others that have experimented the same things before .....

It's a bit less great (and, admit it, also a bit less funny ) when, experimenting just for the fun or the will to not follow a guideline, you end zapping a high cost diode and maybe also a high cost driver ..... or maybe more than one ..... (except if you have a lot of spare diodes and drives, or a lot of spare money that you don't know how to use in a different way )

Anyway, it's true that none can constrain peoples to follow "already-ready" tutorials ..... just, i suggest to start "experimenting" with low-cost diodes and drives, if someone don't know at least the basics of electronic (just for keep any eventual loss as low as possible) .....

It is a Teach Toaster the basics of Electronics Thread and
is therefore in the wrong section....

As was already stated.... you will need to bring yourself up
to speed with some basic electronic theory...

You can't run if you don't first learn to crawl and walk...

I see (by you still using a crappy low capacity 9V Battery) that
you don't listen when more knowledgeable people than you tell
you something...

You will never learn if you don't listen...

Get some basic electronics knowledge and experience and come
back to this thread when you have some...

Just stop by your thread to see how you were doing with your project... and I see not so good and you have gotten a few good, old-time members upset.

Your thread started like you were going to write a how-tutorial but instead it looks like you are the one that needs to learn the basics and, then, be able to create a tutorial.

There are many good members that are going to try to help you, but you do need to listen to our advice... just look at what you posted to my post:

It is called an electronic diagram, not a pic. And, you really do not even know how to make a test load, you have demonstrated that you are a complete noobie in electronic by showing how you "wired" your project and how you are testing it. We can see what you are doing wrong, you just need to listen and learn, if that is what you want.

Please, just step back a little, tone down your language, be respectful, admit when you are wrong (call it humility or modesty), if you do not understand, ask, and we gladly help you.

This thread had good intentions, but you cant have a tutorial and not know the ins and outs of what you're trying to teach. Its like me writing a recipe for lasagna, when I never made one before. Also you do have to listen. These people would not lie to you, or bring you down a false avenue. By not taking their advice, you're 1. going to do it wrong, and 2. wasting the time of people trying to help you.

You cannot create a tutorial without ALL the gathered info, and a FULL understanding of what you are trying to teach. Only after you have everything gathered do you post the thread.

Personally I dont think you have the chops to pull it off. Prove me wrong.
