Case pin?

This may be a really stupid question, but I need to ask it to fully understand and make sure I am not doing something wrong. I recently looked at DTR's thread Host Grounding and it got me questioning if what I am doing is correct. So, I have been cutting the CASE pins off my diodes 405nm. So I only had the pos and neg pins which of course are soldered to the driver. Is this what I should be doing with the case pin? I don't see how it can be used but often in peoples builds I see it being used but can never tell where it goes. Sorry for this question but I am new to this and just want to understand it FULLY so I don't make anymore mistakes. Thanks

You don't have to use the case pin if you don't need it but I would not clip them off as they don't do anything sitting there and if you ever need it then it will be there for you. They can be used as a point to attach a ground lead if your host does not provide one as long as your heatsink is in electrical contact with the host body.
