I haven't gotten a response back from WL yet about the crooked lens issue. I'll give them a day or two to clear out any leftover support issues from the holidays before I really get on them.

I was able to successfully bond my wire support by injecting hot glue all the way into the laser diode's plastic backing (so it had something to grip) and then reassembled and tested my laser tonight. I'm thrilled to be back to square one :D

Thanks again to everyone for their suggestions and support.

Your case should be a good test of WL to see if we are going to get any kind of support. They clearly screwed up your laser.

Glad you got it working. Lets us know what kind of beam profile you get with that lens!

Ordered the "Eagle Pair" googles from fleabay, 7 pair still available as of this post. Also ordered the Tenergy battery you recommended.

Will take a look at my inner lens assy and also do the training cap glass removal. Sure wish my G2 had the G1 instant-on full power mode. Didn't realize how clunky the Safety Switch system was until after I got it.

A few comments (now that I've been able to play with my G2 for about a week):

Battery - I haven't even touched the one sent from WL. I got the Tenergy one and it is working fantastically. I haven't measured the run time specifically, but it is certainly over an hour. (EDIT: Just tested it. After running continuously on high power constant wave it remained on for 1 hr 24 mins. When I took out the battery immediately after it was only slightly warm)

Adjusting the focus - It took me about an hour to get the epoxy off of the lens housing. HUGE pain, but well worth it. I've done a few less than perfect calculations and got results of 1.3+ and 1.8+ divergence after fine tuning the focus. Split the difference and I'm satisfied with what I got.

My main concern is that the long axis at aperture is almost 6 mm. I'm sure there's a way to correct this, but my handy focusing tool mentioned by Daguin only seems to fit the outer edge of the lens housing. It works great as far as that part goes, but doesn't help me as far as taking the lens assembly apart to put the lens closer to aperture to make the beam thinner. Is this advisable? Or should I be happy with what I have?

I ordered an extra pair of goggles too. i got my order.. they sent me one cheapie goggles no info on it, and one good pair of ARG #35 OD 7+ even EN207 Certified.. I wish they would have sent me two of the better ones writing on lenses says/engraved
" 190-532nm OD7+ VLT 48%
>315-532 DM L5 +IR L6 NIOR CE"

they look alot like OEM Laser sysms ARG goggles style #35

There has been a very informative discussion on measuring mRad at this thread. Seems most of us are doing it wrong since the measurement at the aperture is the other axis. Best way to measure it is to take it at a long distance, where the aperture number is irrelevant.

I wouldn't worry about the beam width at the aperture and certainly wouldn't mess with the lens if you are happy with it otherwise.

Glad you are enjoying your laser!

Thanks
A couple of G2's have arrived with the training cap glued in, :banghead:
hope yours isn't one of them. Still trying to figure the best way to unglue them.
I think soaking them in some kind of glue remover is the way to go.

Hi all,

I just received my G2 and have two questions:

- Does the charger work with UK current or will I have to get an actual transformator to change the UK 220v to US 130v?
- The laser works fine in all modes except continues high power, it just switches off after 2 sec. everytime I switch it into constant high power. What could cause this?

Thanks for any help!

Don't know about the charger voltage. It says input voltage 100-240v on the back of mine. Should be OK.

Try a different battery.

Ok, thanks for the answer. Also, does the charger have an overcharging protection in place? I realise it turns green once the battery is charged, but do I have to watch out for that happening and remove the battery right away?

I've left mine in a long time after it went green (not the OEM battery). It should be OK. Just remember that one OEM battery blew up, although it was NOT in the WL charger.

Yeah, I read about that...which is rather frightening.
Now I am just wondering where the issue with constant mode in high power could come from. I hope it is just the battery. Could it be the 'below 2.5v'-cutoff?

Most likely Your battery cannot sustain the current needed for full power. Do You have another battery to try?

My G1 came with excellent focus, however the beam exits the aperture off axis.
I wasn't sure if it would have been the lens off axis, or the diode pressed in the module off axis, so I have left it alone. Its a minor annoyance, but it is a shameful indication as to the shoddy assembly of this laser. I just laughed to myself about it. What a joke!

I didn't even get the "full power" lens with mine. All I got was the training lens which was installed on the laser. I had no choice but to remove the neutral density filter glass from the training lens on mine, which many of you have already done.

Upon reading your post, though, I decided to look at my lens again.

It IS seated well and epoxied in place, however upon closer examination, the gap between the lens and the threaded barrel that it screws into is smaller on the side that is in the same direction that the beam "leans", and confirms to me the reason for the beam being crooked.

Could it be that the threads of the newer style lens don't match the threads of the barrel that the lens screws into very well? Presumably the threads were machined to fit the original lens (with the loose optics rattling around, ), and the new lens is a bit smaller, requiring a dab of epoxy to keep it from moving around and going out of focus. :tsk:

I guess now I will eventually remove the epoxy on mine and use some teflon tape to make it fit better and straighten the crooked beam..

IMHO, the Spyder III Artic should be renamed the Spyder III Anti-climatic..

I am just glad I got mine at all, and I won't be bothering Wicked with my issues of the crooked beam and missing full power lens, as I would prefer not to have to waste my time dealing with them ever again.

This laser is a joke, and from other's reports, I consider myself LUCKY that the crooked beam is my only issue. Who cares if the "full power" lens is missing, the training lens with the glass removed is better anyway.

1. Yes. Your charger will work with 220V, all you need is the plug-adapter.
2. If your Arctic goes off quickly in high-power CW mode, your battery is low and should be charged.

ps: I thought I answered these same exact questions in a different thread last week.
