Hello everyone.  I am a complete forum noob, and I had a few questions for my first DIY laser.

I was considering buying one of DrLava's Micro FlexDrives for a build I am planning on doing.

Is this driver okay to use with a Sony SLD1239JL-54 Diode that is installed in an aixiz module?

I am an EXTREME novice on lasers, and I was wondering if anyone had any type of instructions for installing the driver onto that diode with the aixiz housing.  I really want to get into making lasers, and if you could provide some help, that would be absolutely fantastic.

Many thanks to everyone, I am relying on you guys to answer this for me, because you all seem extremely helpful.

I already sent a message to DrLava, and haven't heard back from him yet, but any help you guys could provide would be so much the better.

Thanks again,

Pseud.

also, I was wondering why the mA rating matters, and is that just a POT? could you tell me what the mA rating would be or why exactly it would be extra money to preset it?

Hey Pseud,

Instructions for using the flexdrive come with the driver in the package, and are available on DrLava's website where he sells the flexdrives. You need to set the mA current of the driver to around 200-225mA for the J-54 sony diode for it to perform best.

You need a diode test load in order to simulate a diode and be able to measure the current with a multimeter to know how much to turn the pot. You can't just guess while turning the pot, it changes exponentially and is nearly impossible to tell how much it should be turned for 200mA.

I think you'll need to jumper the High (reds) setting on the flexdrive as well, they come standard as Low (for blu rays, etc) which only goes up to 150mA. Instructions are included on how to do this as well, it is very small though and you need to be good at soldering to do this.

I'd recommend getting it preset to 200mA to avoid all this hassle, especially if you don't have all the tools (test load, digital multimeter, soldering gun).

good luck,
Kendall

Okay, well I have a digital multimeter and a soldering gun, but for the $3.00 it is to set the current is it not worth it to mess around with that?

Thank you for all the help, by the way.

Yes,you will want to have it preset. If you set it yourself you run the risk of blowing the diode OR the drive.

Thanks so much, I need to figure out how to make the negative connection to the inside of my case. I should be fine, though.

Welcome to the forum :)

What case are you putting it into? the aixiz module? I think that is a 16x diode from stonetek(correct me if im wrong) so you should get your driver preset to 300mA...thats what i have mine at and it has been pretty good for a couple of months now...also if you are just putting it into an aixiz module then for $21.50 you can turn it into a labby style laser and you can leave it on for a very long time...(2-6 hours..)

Well I was planning on getting it installed in the aixiz module, and yes, I was buying from stonetek. How do I make it into a labby laser?

It's a 3g. Thanks for looking.

What kind of lasers are you using right now? And have you built a labby before?

Yep a red labby...I also have a blu-ray pocket pal and a green pen style...all are 100mW+ .... I am also working on my "pocket rocket" blu-ray which will be pretty sweet...I have a 3g too...I can help you build any of those and more...it depends on your budget...
