Got it solved.

Ok, I have looked and looked for some ballast resistors for my Hene tube that I am getting soon, and I can't find any that would work. I need 68K total ohms and the only one I can find are less than ten and are for cars and such. Does anyone know where I can get some that would work?( can be more than one ex. two 34's etc.) Also I'm looking for a male Alden plug.(got it sorted)

Thanks

These people have a $10 minimum order

High Voltage Connectors

This is from their ording page:

International Customers: Global Express Mail, Express Mail, Priority Mail, First Class Mail (no insurance if order totals less than $20.00 USD), UPS Express, UPS Express Saver and DHL may be used. Please contact us for accurate shipping costs if you are sending payment in advance. Be sure to give complete mailing instructions including address, country, telephone number and details you wish considered for customs. For example, you may want a declaration "For Amateur Radio Use" or a telephone number on the outside of the package. Please give us as many details as possible so that we can expedite your order. E-Mail and Fax orders are welcome and encouraged. Our dedicated machine is monitoring the line 24 hours a day. Worldwide Shipments Made Daily!! 1000’s of International Customers in Over 200 Countries Served!!

Priority mail, small, flat rate box should be around $12. First class on such a small light item should be less.

If you can wait til tomorrow (when I get home again), I will look to see if I have an extra Alden from a salvage you can buy. It will cost less ($10) and we can include it in the box with the laser for no additional shipping

I have never actually had to by a ballast resistor. There always seems to be one on hand from another salvage. I don't have enough to sell, but I have never needed to buy one

Peace,
dave

Thanks Dave, I will indeed wait till tomorrow.
Now I just need to find out about the resistors...
Not even one?:yabbem:

Sorry. I just went through that large batch of salvaged HeNe's. One of the main problems with older "blown" HeNe's is that the resistor has overheated. I used up any "extras" I had, repairing them.

Peace,

Brando, I am pretty sure I have one left from an old deceased tube...

I have no use for it so provided I find it and it isn't blown, as dave mentioned, it's yours.

That being said I am on my way to bed, will look for it tomorrow. Another factor is that I live in Europe, however, based on the last shipping time, a week or two is the expected shipping time frame.

Provided I find it and it tests ok, I can have it out Wednesday.

Anyway will let you know tomorrow, if you still need it.

How many mW is your Tube...
How many do you need...
I have some NOS 68K 2Watt Carbon Resistors..

I only need one. I'm waiting on brtaman's reply before I continue looking for some ballast resistors.

The tube is one of daguins 14"ers, here is a spec sheet he sent me in a PM.

I finally found it, for some reason it was in my pulse cap box...:thinking, It measures in at 34k ohm though...sorry bout that:/

So I would go with Jerry, on the plus side he is also in Canada so you will get it much sooner than through me.

PM me your address I finally found it, for some reason it was in my pulse cap box...

It measures in at 34k ohm though, seems to be in good order.

Half way there . . . . .

Quick on the quote eh. :na:

I hadn't noticed the 68k min. req that was posted. But if it is still of use of use, I have no need for it.

If you have another one then they can be of use, if not, then thanks for the offer.

Strange, i always thought that a plain old metal film resistor in the 2 to 5 watt range would be OK as a ballast resistor? Or perhaps one of those wirewound, white ceramic-encased, square resistors be good for the job... I have a drawer-full of power resistors in the 50K to 150K range, let me know if these can be used.

A regular carbon resistor is used as the ballast resistor in some of my
5mW aluminum tube enclosed HeNe...
I've also experimented with an experimental shop built High Voltage HeNe
PS for 3-5mW HeNe tubes...
These 68K 2Watt Corbon Resistors were part of the stock fot the experiments.

Any Resistor of the correct value and wattage can be used as a Ballsast
resistor... although I've had some arcing using Metal Film resistors..

2W seems a bit low. Isn't the recommendation 4W or more?

There are quite literally countless combinations of smaller resistors that can give ≈68KΩ @ 4W (or 2W if I'm wrong). For example, you could use a grid of two-by-six 22KΩ ¼W resistors for the equivalent of 66KΩ @ 3W
