3.8mm Extractor Dented Diode....Advice?

Hey, so I have had issues with my MS-V4 hosts and decided my best course of action was to transplant my diodes over to some of Jayrob's Chrome Pen Hosts. Well, I thought I was doing my PL520 diode first, and it went very well. Everything went perfect, although when I tested it before putting everything in the pen it turned out to be my 450nm diode...no biggie.

So I went to go do my PL520 diode, and I got it out, but after grabbing my press and getting my next module ready I looked at the diode and to my horror there is now a big dent on the side of my diode can.

Nothing looks broken in there, but it is very much dented. Should I attempt to decan the diode or send it to someone else and see if they can? This is quite dissapointing to me but I am at that point in the hobby where I sort of just sigh really heavily, give the diode a moment(or two) of silence and then look at my budget to see if I can afford another. Unfortunately this is the most expensive diode I have ever owned and also now the 3.8mm Extractor tool is bent a bit on the top fragile edge. Luckily those were the only two diodes I had in pressfit module hosts but I just needed to vent a little bit and get this off my chest.

Any advice would be welcome but I have a feeling DTR will simply be getting more of my money. As per usual.

Pictures please.... And how did it happen? Misplaced the extractor? I have to ask since I am getting my tools next week and will like to avoid any damage to any diode.

Is the window loose in the can now? If not you may just have a slight dent with no ill effects. If the window is loose then decanning is the only option. Shake the diode a bit and see if you hear a rattle.

Wow, that's dented! , is the output affected, does it look strange? of not I'd get it in a host, and LEAVE it in that host.

Yeah, damage was caused by the extractor. I don't have it hooked up to it so I cannot say how the output looks. However, I still have my press and the 3.8mm module and a microboost ready and waiting.

Although no 10440's I am hoping AAA's will work for now.

Well just got done pressing it into a new module very carefully and carefully soldering on a microboost and hooked it up to a Li-Ion that I know is charged and nothing :/ I didn't know how long the 3.8mm extractor would last, but I did expect atleast two uses. It sucks that the diode i saved was a quarter of the price of the one I lost. :/

Just like that...? Can you re-double-triple-check all your connections, as well as trying other driver/battery comboes, because a damage to diode's can cannot possibly be a cause of "nothing". You should have output, a lot of it, if only maybe warped by misplaced diode glass and all that.

Don't give up on it yet.

Well if it doesn't work anymore than the news is really bad. Was the extractor the one made by Flaminpyro ?

AFAIK Flaminpyro is the only person making presses and extractors. I have checked all connections and tried different batts. If the diode is not borked, then the driver is.

what did you use with the extractor a vice or some prier's? I'm guessing this is what caused the problem! it looks as though there might have been sideways presser on the press causing it to dent the can. a vice would have given nice even pressure with no dented can.

I used a vice, so no sideways pressure whatsoever. I made sure it was very well centered as well. My guess is that the extractor bent while pushing out the first diode and I didn't notice the damage after the extraction.

The extractor for the 3.8mm diodes is VERY thin walled.
This is necessitated by the construction of the diode.
Anyone using the 3.8mm extractor needs to be very mindful of the centering and fragility of the tool.

Examine it after every use
Make sure it has seated over the can
Store it in something that will protect it
They are a great tool, but they are fragile
