Why arent red lasers so powerful?

After reading on forums and watching videos of lasers, I realized that blue and green laser diodes can have a power rating as high as 5W. However, I have never seen a red laser with a power rating even as high as 1W. Does anybody know why?

Thanks for the reply. I also noticed that blue lasers are cheaper because they are produced more and have more purposes than red lasers.

There are 2.5w 638 diodes out there! DTR sells a 700mw diode that will hit 1w if you build it right. Actually I just bought mine last night, I'll post pics when its finished.

I bought a 445nm 1-2W laser from dtrs laser shop, then I wanted to make a red laser. If you ever find a 1 or 2W 638nm diode for sale please post the link here. I would also look at the pictures when you post them. Thank you for replying.

As Encap and others have stated, there are quite a few 1W+ red lasers out there. You can buy one from a reputable dealer such as Laserbtb, or have one built by a forum member, or go the DIY route.

Look at the custom google search bar at the bottom of the page for many examples. I typed in "1W red laser" and many threads came up with just what you're looking for.

As an example, HERE is one that I built a while back, it's 1.25W.

thanks for the link, noobphaser. I might just make a 700mw 638nm laser because they get to be more expensive with higher power ratings.

I bought it from DTR, it's the Mitsubishi 638nm 500mW diode (ML501P73-02), and module W/G-2 lens (DTR)

I'd watch the double posting bud, the mods don't like it and it's not allowed.. Use the edit button :)
