Default What DVD drive to use?

I'm trying to find a DVD burner that has a 200mW (or more) diode. Will pretty much any DVD burner work, or do only certain ones have diodes of that power? Does it depend on the write speed?

Thanks

Have a look in the BST section I'm pretty sure there are some people there selling them.
Styropyro is definately selling some but only in packs of 5

Wow he was just trying to help.
You can search if you don't like the suggestions people made.
I highly suggest you start out with something like this: 635nm Red 5.6mm laser diode - $3.99 : Modwerx Shop
if you can't master the search function, a high powered laser might not be suitable for you.

type this into google....lots of good information comes up.
"site:laserpointerforums.com dvd drive"

A lot of members here don't spoon feed people easy to find information.

the < sign means AT LEAST so <200 is 200 and above ( wink ) , but dvd diodes won't go much further than 250 if i am right and diodes above 250 are not verry good for burning cause the dot size / shape

LOL edit : i ment the > sign

weeba2kv, sorry if I came off as being rude, but I wasn't trying to be. (I guess that's a danger of being succinct.)

Thanks for the clarification though. So is it pretty safe to say that all DVD writers are between 200 and 250mW?

yes as for i know all dvd writers have a max between 200 n 250 maybe 300 but that means a life time of *you don't wanna know * SHORT define short maybe a week or 2 weeks constant , red is a lilbit crappy ... i wish i had 2 watts of red... for a full RGB again red is a lil difficult

some dvd diodes can give ~ 300 but it's not for a life time , aka i am not sure but for a burning pointer you can have much fun from a overclocked dvd diode @ 280, 300 mW , again it does not last long

Do you say it's a bit crappy because it's not as bright as other colors?

I think I will be satisfied with 200mW. We'll see. I also won't know how much it really is because I don't have a meter.

a red dvd burner diode is not even as bright as a red laser it has a darker red color that is even more crappy ( Laser Color Visibility - Warnlaser.com ) enjoy the information cheers =)

It will cost you more to buy a hole dvd drive, look for a LPC-815 Sled.
That diode is good for 200mw with a acrylic lense, 250mw with a aixiz glass lense, or 300mw with a 605-G-1 lense

Take a look at Modwerx you can get a sled and a Aixiz module in one place
LPC-815 20x DVD burner laser lens assembly w/ red laser diode [LPC-815] - $8.99 : Modwerx Shop

what are you planing to use as a host or what battery? so we can hellp you pick a driver.

Default Re: What DVD drive to use?

I'm surprised that the type of lens used would make 50mW of difference.

To me, half the fun of making this laser is to make it at a ridiculously low cost.

So I was thinking of going with a DDL driver, since I would only have to buy the LM317. (I'm not sure where to get that though. It doesn't seem practical to get something so cheap online and pay for shipping.)

I will probably buy an aixiz module with an acrylic lens. I think I've seen them for less than $5.

For the host, I have a flashlight that may work, although it is made of plastic, so it might be tricky to heatsink it properly. This flashlight takes 2 AAs. The DDL driver probably needs more than 3V though, so that might be a problem.

I'm hoping to get a used or broken DVD drive for under $5 somewhere. That would be even cheaper than buying a sled online. I'm going to have to be patient though.

Default Re: What DVD drive to use?

that's a rough guideline actual results will vary depending on the diode efficiency and the curent you feed it. 350mA will be around 200mw and 400ma ~ 250mw, There are some threads around that give safe curents for known diodes.
I do recommend the aixiz glass lens its only 8$ and will have a AR (anti reflective) coating, the acrylic lens that comes with a aixiz module has no AR coating. You will also have to open the back to get full power from the acrylic, there is lots of info about this on the forums.

2 14500 AA size but 3.7v (4.2v full charge) will work good for a lm317
DealExtreme: $5.37 TrustFire Protected 3.7V 900mAh 14500 Lithium Battery (2-Pack)

and if you havent seen it yet a good lm317 guide
Laser driver - It can be done

Happy building and good luck

Thanks for the info. I guess it does make sense that you could gain quite a bit with an AR coating. I will consider spending a few extra dollars for that.

I think the safety glasses I'll need to get for this laser will cost more than everything else combined. I was trying to find something for red similar to the $8 shipped focalprice green-blocking goggles, but the cheapest I have seen is $15 from o-like, and that doesn't include shipping.
