a flat black, or a non reflective black should absorb the most of any color.

The beam itself doesn't have a temperature, it's just light, but heat is produced when all that light strikes an object. It all depents on how much light the surface absorbs. And also how collimated the beam is. ;)

You have to get the housings online, almost everybody here gets their diodes and housings from here:
http://sales.stonetek.org/
You can find diodes, housings, diodes preinstalled in housings, etc.

Who said the diodes there aren't the best. They've performed extremley good, and they're cheap too. Of course they're not the best out there since they're 16x, but you can't beat the price.

The store linked above belongs to SenKat. His diodes are 16x only, if you want more powerful diodes you'll have to get a dvd burner and salvage the diode yourself.

I don't know who's the fool that said they weren't good, but here's a graph of it's performance compared to an open can made by hemlock mike: (note, the senkat diode is the GB sony one)

mA is the current going to your diode ;) And nm is the wavelength of a laser, but nm isn't in the graph? :-?
