10 pcs. 635nm red laser diodes DL 6353TL 7mW NEW Ten 10 - eBay (item 380165816584 end time Oct-14-09 06:16:30 PDT)

I ordered this diode in a 3-pack, but I am having trouble with the polarity. I assumed it was case negative like the regular DVD burner diodes. Just a few minuets ago I soldered everything up but I am getting no light. Can someone look at the data sheet and confirm the polarity for me? I don't understand the way they pictured it.

Here is the data sheet. I tried searching the forums but I couldn't find very much about this diode. I'm hooking the VDC to pin 1 and GND to pin 2.

it is the same pinout as most reds. did you discharge the cap? i have similar diodes at modwerx for ~4$ if you need another...

hm that's what I thought. Yes I did discharged the cap and I thought I did a very neat and quick job soldering this one. I still have 2 extra diodes, so I guess Ill start hooking up another. Good thing these diodes are so cheap.

Did you try switching it to case positive? They come both ways.

I have a batch here that is case positive

No I haven't tried switching it. I didn't realize they came both ways. Ill try switching the polarity tomorrow then, that could be it. Could the diode I used be damaged now from hooking it up wrong if it is case positive?

Not unless you shot it with too high a current. As long as you were using a driver, it should be fine (if it was a polarity problem).

Do you guys know of any good places to get 635nm modules 10-20mw? I didn't see any on O-like or Rayfoss.

mine are case positive. exact same diodes from same seller. they go up to 20mw consistently, then stay there independently from current. at around 70mA they reach 20mW. even at 80mA they didnt burn out. i tested 6 of 10, all exact the same.

if someone has case negative or case neutral 635nm diodes i'd really like to trade. either a few of mine case positive diodes or some other laser-parts. anyone?
(i simply dont have common positive drivers here and only have 3.7v for the diode)

That reminds me!

I totally forgot to send a few diodes to "someone", I still have your addy (I think) and will send some off to you.

I just got my 635 laser working 2 minuets ago btw. My diodes are case positive as many of you have expected. Running one at 40mA, the red/orange beam is really pretty =]. Thank you all for help!

When in doubt, I run in circles - yell and shout------- OOPS wrong show

I use the diode test setting on my DMM. It will show polarity and a very rough estimate of junction voltage. The DMM is a handy tool. Also at that low current, you may see the color as an LED.
