am trying to design unit that will use mechanically automated pairs of laser diode modules (635nm) to streak two dots of red across the stage replicating the glowing beady eyes of darting rats. hope to automate many, many pairs of these "rats' eyes" at once to create the illusion in the dark that the stage is filled with rats. its a sweet children's show, wouldn't you know.

is it correct that i should stay UNDER 5mW to avoid regulation?

can anyone point me in a good direction for economical units (as in a few bucks per module) and quickly available (as in the US)?

much thanks in advance

Yeah, Aixiz would probably be good if you need it in a timely manner. They're about $3 each in bulk.

If time is not so much an issue, go for DealExtreme and their Bulk Rate discount, so you can get them for about $1 each.

You could also just get a few laser ones, and then the rest can be red LEDs, that way it isn't just cluttered with laser eyes, but still looks cool.

Wouldn't LED's be Best? Much Cheaper, easier to Wire up for someone new. I'm sure they would be bright enough? It's in a dark room right?
