Default Standard laser pointer dangerous?

Would a 5mw conventional laser pointer be dangerous to direct eye exposure?

No anything <=5mw is fine to have brief exposures to the eye, although some lasers like the true 5 can be dangerous because they output more than 5mw, also they output some ir. *Althouh a good green laser, like a <5mw from novalasers or laserglow would be fine to have brief flashes get in your eye.

...lazer... ;D ;D ;D

Note: other lasers from nova or laserglow can and will damadge your eye instantly, no matter who makes it any laser that is above 5mw will damadge your eyes.

Remember, you may think goggles are expensive but compared to your eyes there well worth the investment.

OMG you did not just say that. Even a brief flash of 15mW causes permanent vision damage! Someone around here posted a thread about it... i tihnk it was around here.
<5mW is considered safe because it triggers the blink reflex in time to prevent permanent damage. Over 5mW, if there is even the slightest chance of a direct exposure or reflection GET SOME DAMN GOGGLES!

yeah but the way you were talking suggested any nova laser (X-105 etc) would be ok to have flashes get in your eye. This place doesn't need any more blind people.

All lasers have some form of risk involved when pointed at someone's eye.

Its a good practice not to shine a laser of ANY power at ANYTHING living.

Now it's really getting confusing.
Anyway common sense and goggles are the best ways not to get blind because:
1)A green laser will more likely cause damage than a red laser since DPSS lasers usually have better beam specs(smaller beam diameter=more power per surface) ,for example a 2mW laser with a beam diameter of 0.1mm would screw your eyes up in an instant while a 6mW(class 3b) laser with a 6mm wide beam would to far less damage.
2)You can't be sure of a dpss IR leakage until you test it.
3)and for that matter can be sure of a laser's output or label until you test it since some 650nm lasers have 635nm labels and some green lasers also have 635nm labels : and some lasers have labels with typo's like "DRIECT" and "DANGRER" : : :
Just do everything possible NOT to shine it in your eye.

I can pop a black balloon with my 5mw red laser from deal extreme when i adjust the focus.. So it can be dangerous.

Only class I lasers are entirely harmless. Class I to IIIa/3R are only safe in the sense they don't cause eye damage.

Simple rule to see by:
Do not look directly into any laser beam with remaining good eye.

erm i hate to say this but if my 5mw core from WL hurts my eyes off reflections, does that make this unit over-powered? ive had a few 5mw's before and this one is the brigthest of them all?
quiet surprising for a WL product.

532nm appears quite bright because its near the peak sensitivity level of our eyes, so all green pointers will appear brighter than the same power of red, thus will probably hurt your eyes more off reflections.
