Hi guys !

I finished my first laser . A 10mW green one around 13$. But i know that its not powerful.

So i found a DVD burner around the house and i opened it.

There are 2 diodes and took out the biggest one.

The DVD is LG GSA-H10N.

Googling about it it says its a 650nm with ~230mW.

Now im not sure about the driver to use.

I bought Aluminum Alloy Flashlight Housing Casing for UltraFire WF-501B - Blue - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

this host and actually im making the heatsing.

I have everything to make that dummy load test for the current but just need the driver

Thank you

Well, linear drivers are the most used on red laser diodes. The issue is to know what specs your diode has, in oder for you to know how you should drive it.

Hi again guys . Im coming here once again . I bought the LM317 and already have the 2x 10ohm res / cap / diode / but im not sure if i need that 100ohm variable resistor or just a 100 ohm would do the job. Also the best current to start the test for the diode would be ?

thank you

Hey Prototype, an LM317 with 2 x 10ohm resistors will do the job of driving your diode. I will need to look at the schematic again, but all I ever used for my builds were the voltage regulator and resistor(s) between the in and adj pins.

HI :)

Thank you for the response .

I have the laser diode / host / heatsink / And the parts to build the Lm317 except the 100Ohm variable resistor :)

No i dont have a LPM unfortunately :(

But i want to try out the diode first than put it in the host :)

And wannaburnstuff i would be pleased if you gave me the best circuit to power that laser :)

Thank you

So i tried some exp :p

I hooked the LM317 Adj and Vout with a resistor 10 Ohm . Than the + of the LD with Adj . The negative with - of LD and Vin with + of battery.

And i got a small beam . Whats wrong ? The current ?

What does the beam look like? I wonder if maybe you grabbed the IR diode instead of the red. The IR would be a faint dark red.

I cant see it in the wall . Only if i take it really close to the wall i see a divided beam. (/ /)
Im sure its not the IR one :) i used a spray over it :D and nothing . Even flour didnt do anything .

Edit : I have 8-10 26650 batteries . Then only problem is that i have only 4 of them fully charged :D And my charger died. So till i make a new one im with only 4 of them :/

Edit 2 : I found 9 18650 but same problem :p no charger :/

Did you use one 10 Ohm resister? or two in parallel? If you only used one then the output to the diode will only be about 125ma, if you used two then it should be about 250ma, and that should be about what you want. Also are you powering this with two batteries? If your trying to use only one it wont work.

Well i used only one 10 Ohm res. I had 2 But one didnt work :/ So im going tomorrow to the shop to get some others :)

Also i have some batteries as i wrote before :)

Which one should i use ? I mean the V that i need ?

About 7v or more, don't go over about 9v or your LM317 may overheat to fast.

I placed a heatsink on the Lm317. Anw ill try it and will reply in about 16 hrs :)

Thank you

So i went to the shop and took 4x 10Ohm and 4x 5.3Ohm. So i used both 2x 10 Ohm and 1x 5 Ohm resistor with a 7.5V battery. And both gave me the same result :/ A small red dot on the diode but no reflection aywhere . What is wrong ?

This is how i connected them .
