Hi

I want to make a toy that if a button is pressed, a laser that looks like a beam of fire is ejected.

But I need to know if it will be safe for the general public.

So to sum it up, here it is: Fire-red laser, safety, general public, laser has to be seen.

I see this is your first post, so welcome to LPF! :)

For the cheapest red laser which will look like "fire" try looking at 635nm. It's still red, but it's as close to orange as you will get in diode form before paying tons of money :(

:)

Greenlander please don't tell this person where to get laser equipment... The idea is to build a toy that's visible (meaning high power) but is safe for public exposure. See the problem?

Edited my previous post, my apologies :D

It's good that you offer help and even though we try we need to also filter out potential disastrous situations. A laser should never be in a toy and should never be aimed at anyone (the public).
I'm actually confused if this person wants red to shoot out or wants the beam to be shaped as fire? wtf

Yeah, I think a big red LED from radio shack or eBay would work. Also, if it has to be a laser, I don't know if it would work but consider a 1mw 635nm laser with some kind of spread attachment on it and shoot it through dry ice fog.

Unless you have A LOT of fog, then safe lasers will only make a dot.
Otherwise, you will need A LOT of power.

Silverfire is right. The fog you would need would be much too dense especially for using a safe 635. I could see maybe green but not in red.

You want to have them shoot each other? Do you want the other toy to melt? In that case fire is 9000000000% safer than using a high powered laser for public display

I can't use real fire because that is WAY TOO dangerous.

So I thought of lasers.

This is the problem we have with laser misuse. People don't understand how dangerous lasers truly are.
