I extracted a 5mw diode from a laser pointer powered by 3 LR44 1.5 volt button cells at 150 mAh. Could I power this using 3 standard serial AA batteries 1.5 volt at 1800 mAh and what would happen to the power of the laser at the higher amperage. Do I run the risk of burning out the diode? WOuld I get more output. Do I need to heat sink it?

Yes, nothing, not really, no and probably not :p

Those crappy keychain red lasers usually just use a resistor for current limiting. If you used more than 3 standard batteries you'd risk burning it out.

mAh and mA are two different things. You could run that "chip" laser off a car battery if you limit the Ld current to its design parameters.

Yeah, as long as you stick to the same voltage, high mAh will just let it run longer.
