isn't it illegal to shine a laser at a person? you'd be just as guilty as the perp. i don't think a laser is a great deterrant. a 4 d mag light shone at them to temporarily blind them and then a quick swing of the bat lie A-Rod may be a better defense for your father and for his defense in court, should the perps decide to sue you!

yeah dont see it working. a thief walks up to your parents. he stands there as your dad gets the laser out of his pocket. he keeps still as the laser is focused on to his arm, till it burns (objects need to be barely moving to burn them unless laser is very high power). he is confused and scared so much by the dot burning his arm that he flees.

the cheapest best advice is to just turn and walk away (or just hit them with the maglight, no need for working batteries or lamp!) :D

another thought is get a pellet gun with a red laser sight. perps may think it's the real deal, pellet guns are prpbably legal where your folks are travelling, just not the east coast.

More dangerous advice.

Let's taunt a person who may possibly be carrying a REAL gun with your FAKE gun. Great idea. Then when the gun fight begins, guess who loses.

If you are going to defend your life, you need to use a weapon that can quickly end another life. I'm not going to beat around the bush here, it's your life. You use a firearm.

and the man shining the laser at the perp, what could be going in his mind? perhaps he's thinking it's a gun with a laser sight!

so, what's the difference? a laser or one atleast with something to slow the perp.
either way, he's sol if the perp is armed. or perps!::can::can::gun::gun::gun:

I can't really understand what you are saying.

Taunting is not a part of self defense. I don't care what scenario you want to portray, it is a stupid idea.

Look, the only real protection is credit cards, or travelers checks. Carry a wallet with a little cash ( good pile of ones ), and the cards. And another for licenses, ect. You can get protection for the cards, and who cares about $20 when facing down a gun? The last thing you want to do is piss off a thief. These are all well know tactics. Why would you give your parents a weapon?

This whole thread is silly.

Ok, I think I see what you are trying to do. Provide a defensive weapon against a thief. Lasers are your "last" line of defense. You would only fire a laser at an attacker after receiving a shot from a firearm. Then in our upside down legal world, you would have committed a felony because lasers are "always" illegal to point at "anyone" including attackers. Your only legal way to fend off an attacker is with martial arts training or a firearm. The firearm also being a felony if you don't possess a concealed firearms permit.(Unless they have entered your home or business of course)

I have the SDlaser301 or this laser: DealExtreme: $31.90 Focusable 50mW Green Laser Pointer with Safety Key Lock (1*18650 Included) ,
It outputs about 70mw and has 0.94 mrad when focused to infinity. When focused to burn at the closest distance from the laser aperture, it has 22-23 mrad. This makes it ideal as a super-bright flashlight (green), that wont damage vision if the beam is wide enough. It will stun people and effectively pass through most sunglasses. Any day I would trust a firearm more than this to save my life, but its a useful thing to have. Weighing in at only $32 US wont set you back too far, the only issue being you have to get specific rechargables that usually can only be found on the internet.
Here are some links for where you can get the batteries and charger:

I would suggest these batteries, they fit well in the laser and have a decent capacity.
DealExtreme: $9.43 TrustFire TR 18650 2500mAh 3.7V Batteries (2-Pack)
chargers can be found here:
DealExtreme: Search for 18650 charger (196 products in 23 categories)

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Jezzus!
What a lot of geekin'
These are just toys, not weapons.
Lasers aren't the solution to everything, in fact, very little.

Get grandpa a nice .380 auto or 9mm and teach him how to use it.
Otherwise he'll just end up with that pointer where the sun don't shine.

Sounds like pepper spray or Mace would be a better way to go for them.
