I happen to have seen the original wholesaler for these... they are rated <140mw... somehow at 100mA... ;D

DX rebadges them I think, and overrates them.

ok so there not worth buying
i can build 2x 300 mw + models for 53 dollars

So I just ordered one today as well... we'll see what happens when it gets here! I also have a true 30 green on the way, and my replacement true 50 as well

Dilda Lazor is being sold for cheap (not as cheap as DX) in NZ:

www. buy{vulgar word for faeces here}.co.nz then append /collections/frontpage/products/red-laser-pen-200mw

Who is the actual wholesaler?

Let's not discount the possibility that he is an idiot, now.

Hi Odic, welcome, and thanks for posting! soon some of the members who have laser meters here will receive their lasers and measure the output, so we will know for sure.

Does the driver you mention pulse the laser rapidly in medium mode, or is it CW? Rmember to factor in the lasing threshold when you approximate the power output based on current and optical gain.

I hope you like it here!

Thanks for the welcome, I have posted a few pics in the multimedia section now.

The driver on the homebuilt is simply a modified 1-3v led driver from DX , I keep it on the low setting which gives about 220-230ma from 2 x alkaline cells in, so I was guessing at 180ma to the diode (after taking away a threshold current of 40-45ma).

This is not by any means how I would recommend to drive the diode ;D but my quick stab at a power burst to try and approximate the claimed 200mw ...

The figures in the DX post were only intended as a rough first look guide I missed out detail and obviously the men with the meters will give the real answer...

I am, a chemist by profession, not a a laser buff but did play about with fluorescence decay spectroscopy some years back and at work I did a quick 'lunchtime' comparative calibration of one of the diodes in pulse and continuous mode, unfortunately that equipment is not available now. :'(

Actually the quote in the thread earlier which says my review :( was taken from an answer, not my review :( which is posted at DX now and estimates the output at 160mw! But I would really rather stop guessing and wait for some real data...

Cheers!

Driver I used:

I received my DX 200mW Red today, and it does nothing. It's D.O.A. Any suggestions ? Just looking over it I don't see any obvious problems. For $50 is it worth the trouble of trying to send back? Have not experienced how much of a pain returns are with DX. Mabe it would be worth trying to modify it with new DVD diode, using driver and barrel. But who knows, the problem may be in driver? Any suggestions? Any one had experience in returnes with DX? Thanks.

Batteries are good. What would be best way to test driver board w/ multimeter? Have to take out of barrel to get to it, but then you have to figure out how to hook the power w/o barrel. I guess it would be hard for anyone to say wiyhout seeing it.

I think I figured it out. The on off switch in the end cap is not working. I bypassed it and it came on. Thanks.

Bad luck! :eek:But you are lucky after all if the diode is fine and only switch is the problem. ;D

Right, I got mine today :D.

The battery polarity is reversed. It's not like the KD 50mW, the positive contact on the battery is meant to contact the spring, not the clicky switch. I thought I was having really bad luck until it came to try that (after all, it couldn't have gotten worse).

First thing I did was focus it and shine it on the back of my hand. Ouch. Then I tried burning black tape (it worked!), my mouse mat, my desk (all black, and no, I'm not a goth), etc, etc.

It's a very nice pointer. Doesn't have the heavy brass feel of the KD 50mW, and it's roughly the same size as the KD 50mW with 1 CR2 length more. The clicky switch is very well shielded, thank God for that because you do *NOT* want this to go off in your pocket or bag.

I don't know if the power is genuinely 200mW but I know one thing, it hurts.
